Teaching Leaders and The Future Leaders Trust

About us

Teaching Leaders and The Future Leaders Trust are two leading charities with a common mission to transform pupil life chances by building a movement of exceptional leaders at all levels in challenging schools.

The Future Leaders Trust was set up in 2006 to deliver the Future Leaders programme for high-potential aspiring headteachers. Since then it has grown to deliver a range of training and development programmes for aspiring senior leaders through to academy trust CEOs, including the Talented Leader programme for schools in coastal, rural and disadvantaged areas. It has 1,700 leaders working in 1,500 schools including 170 headteachers.

Teaching Leaders was set up as a charity two years later. TL Fellows, the flagship programme for high-potential middle leaders, quickly expanded into primary and Teaching Leaders now also delivers programmes to develop a school’s whole middle leadership team. Teaching Leaders focuses on developing outstanding middle leaders with selective programmes for high-potential individuals and non-selective programmes for middle leadership teams within a school. It has trained 1,958 teachers in over 950 schools and now recruits over 1,000 middle leaders annually to its selective programmes.

Where we are now – the integration

In June 2016 we announced our intention to join forces and form one organisation. We share an ambitious vision and mission to ensure every child fulfils their potential regardless of background. We believe that great school leaders are key to achieving this and that by building a movement of exceptional school leaders at all levels we can transform challenging schools.

Together we have 18 years’ combined success of developing leaders in schools throughout the country and we believe joining forces will help us to make greater impact by doing three things:

  • Build the leadership pipeline in challenging schools by joining up our programmes to provide a clear and cohesive leadership development pathway for the whole leadership spectrum in schools from those aspiring to leadership, all the way through to CEOs of multi-academy trusts.
  • Growing the number of school leaders in the hardest to reach areas, by combining our networks and school relations activity to reach more children in challenging contexts in more areas of the country;
  • Supporting groups of schools more strategically by acting as one single organisation, which can support schools with development and succession planning of their leaders (rather than schools having to deal with two separate contacts);

We are currently working hard to manage an excellent transition into the new organisation and building an exciting and compelling strategy to ensure we create a great future together as one organisation that allows us to achieve our mission. We anticipate this to be complete in November.
