SAINT GEORGE’S SIXTH FORM
Student and Sixth Form Agreement 2017-18
As a Saint George’s Sixth Former, you will ensure the following:
ACHIEVEMENT
• In order to progress into Year 13 students must achieve a minimum of three E grades at AS level (Year 12). This will be based on your official AS results, where applicable, as well as your mock examination grades.
• Those students who do not achieve this minimum standard may be offered the chance to repeat Year 12 subject to Sixth Form and subject availability.
• Students progressing into Year 13 need to strive for their best performance. Year 14 is only offered in extenuating circumstances and at the discretion of the Headteacher.
High achievement levels
• You have chosen to attend a high achieving Sixth Form with high standards, high levels of teaching and learning and high expectations of all that work within it. Consequently, we expect you to do all you can to achieve your potential. Sixth Form teaching staff will regularly issue you with improvements and targets advice (through their SIT marking); it is expected that you will act on this advice.
• Where there is a gap of more than one grade between your End of Year 13 Alps grade and your current grade you will be given a period of time (typically 4 weeks) to demonstrate you are acting on the given advice. This will be confirmed by your subject teacher and then acknowledged by your parents. Your Form Tutor will support you in achieving these ‘improvements and targets’.
• Year 12 is statistically easier than Year 13. Students who achieve a grade E in Year 12 in any subject or who miss their target grade by more than one grade will attend a 1 hourafter-school supervised study session from September for each subject that the above applies to.
• In addition, any Year 13 students who are resitting any AS module(s) will attend a 1 hour after-school supervised study session from January for each subject that the above applies to.
ATTENDANCE
Expectations of students:
As a Saint George’s Sixth Former, youwill ensure the following:
100% attendance and 100% punctuality at all lessons and sessions
• There is a significant correlation between attendance and achievement. Missing lessons and not using self-study periods wisely will prevent you from achieving your potential. Tutor periods and attendance at assembly/worship are compulsory for all Sixth Form students.
• Each unauthorised lesson absence will be treated as truancy and jeopardizes your academic progress. In the event of an unauthorised lesson absence you will be subject to appropriate sanctions.
• If attendance or punctuality deteriorates for no genuine reason then sanctions will be imposed such as:
- Withdrawal of privileges including the ability to leave site during non-contact time.
- Attendance reverts to full-time study daily, P1-P6.
If such sessions are continually missed then the student is likely to be put on a final contract to stay in the Sixth Form.
BEHAVIOUR
• The Saint George’s Sixth Form is the pinnacle of Saint George’s School and our Sixth Form students are important role models to students across the lower school. As a Saint George’s Sixth Former, you will be expected to act and dress as an appropriate role model at all times to reflect your status.
• Refer to the guidelines on expected dress code for Sixth Form students.
• You will bring relevant equipment such as textbooks and folders to all lessons and commit to keep a record of prep.
• Failure to adhere to these requirements will result in appropriate sanctions, given by the subject teacher in the first instance.
EFFORT
A strong work ethic
• Second only to attendance, poor effort is the biggest barrier to achievement. We expect you to work hard both in and out of school because you have chosen to continue in post 16 education; no one has forced you, it is your choice. We therefore expect you to maintain an average ‘behaviour for learning’ grade of at least 2 (Good) or better; anything less is not acceptable as this places you, typically, in the bottom 10-20% of the year group, and usually leads to poor examination performance.
• If you have a ‘behaviour for learning’ grade average worse than ‘2’ for a set of monitoring data, you and your parent/guardian will be expected to attend a Sixth Form review meeting with appropriate actions then agreed.
ICT
As a Saint George’s Sixth Former, you will ensure that you:
• Check your school email regularly, at least once per day as this is the preferred method of communication from many teachers and departments.
• You may bring your own device to lessons and subjects if you wish however you are responsible for safe keeping.
• Adhere to Saint George’s Acceptable Use Policy.
VOLUME OF SUBJECTS
To follow 3 A Levels through the entirety of Sixth Form
• You will follow at least 3 subjects perhaps 4 throughout your Sixth Form studies. This will ensure you are in line with national expectations and not disadvantaged with regard to UCAS and employment applications. In extreme circumstances, where you need to switch/drop an A Level subject you will continue to attend the lessons of the ‘dropped’ subject and undertake silent work in the classroom; a SIMS register will be taken to monitor attendance and the attendance protocols mentioned earlier will apply.
VOLUNTEERING
To complete at least 20 hours of volunteering per year
• Students are expected to complete 20 hours of volunteering per academic year. This may be by using opportunities provided by Saint George’s or by volunteering in activities and organisations outside school. The volunteering needs to be approved by Saint George’s.
• There will be a work experience time slot at the end of Year 12 (last week of the last term) for you to explore employability options. The work experience placement must be approved by Saint George’s.
OUT OF SCHOOL COMMITMENTS
The School recognises the importance and value of these activities whether they be sporting, social or paid employment. However, it is imperative that a Saint George’s student balances these commitments with school work so that it does not suffer adversely.
• Saint George’s will not allow a student to engage in employed work during the hours of a normal school day. School study should always take priority over paid employment.
• Please note that driving lessons should not be not take place during school hours.
• Please try to avoid booking medical appointments during lesson time.

APPENDIX
SIXTH FORM ENTRANCE PROCESS
The Sixth Form entrance process runs during the first two weeks of the academic year. It includes three steps.
STEP 1:Summer Milestones:
These are given to prospective Year 12 students at the Sixth Form Taster Day in July and again after enrolment on Results Day in August. This work must be submitted on DAY 1 of the new academic year. The milestone card will be signed upon acceptance of the work. Sixth Form teachers will assess the submitted work within two weeks upon which feedback will be given to students.
Extensions can be set but this is at the subject teacher’s discretion.Failure to submit the summer milestones means that the students Sixth Form suitability will be questioned.
STEP 2:One week of consolidation in lessons
A judgement will be made regarding the student’s commitment and work ethic within class and Sixth Form as a whole. This includes the ability to submit homework and to keep to set deadlines. If poor, the students Sixth Form suitability will be questioned.
STEP 3: Entrance Assessment(s):
A simple gauge of the skills and knowledge gained in the milestone work and in the first week of a student’s lessons. If a student performs badly the student’s subject suitability will be questioned.
Feedback on the Sixth Form Entrance Process will be given to students and parents by the third week of the academic year. If a student does not successfully manage all three steps then they will not pass the Sixth Form entrance process. Saint George’s may choose to rescind the student’s Sixth Form place in this instant.
