Ameeting organised by the Light Metals and Surface Engineering Divisions and Midlands Region ofthe Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3)

Scope and Background:

To showcase, within a regional forum, some of the latest developments in Surface Engineering technologies being pioneered by UK academic and industrial researchers.

Following the success of the regional Light Metals conference in 2007, a further dedicated event will be hosted in the Midlands, a region richin industrial history and within close reach of several of the UK’s leading academicresearch centres for materials. The topic this time will be Surface Engineering. Key industrial sectors to be covered include; aerospace, automotive, medical and general engineering. Additional presentations will focus on Surface Engineering on the nano scale and both “dry” and “wet” processing.

Format and Preliminary Programme:

The venue for this conference is the Riverside Centre in Derby (DE24 8HY). There is extensive free car parking availability, and the venue is within easy walking distance from Derby’s train and bus stations.

Registration and a finger buffet lunch will be available at the venuefrom12:00, with the forum being formally opened at 13:00. Lunch, afternoon refreshments and evening buffet are included in the registration fee. The programme will feature a fullafternoon of Invited Speakers, plus a poster session aimed primarily at students basedwithin the Midlands region.

A large number of key surface technologies will be represented, and a diverse rangeof applications covered. Following an evening buffet reception and networking sessionduring which prizes will be awarded for the best posters, the forum will conclude with ahigh profile lecture, which will be open to the public as part of the East Midlands MaterialsSociety’s 2009-2010 programme of events. Members of other Regional Societies are ofcourse most welcome to attend.
