To connect to the Speech share while on campus:

Connect to the Speech shared folder from My Computer or Windows Explorer

  1. To connect a drive from My Computer, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Explore.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Map Network Drive.
  1. In the Drive box, click a drive letter.
  1. In the Folder box, type the UNC path for the server and shared resource in the following format: \\english.uwstout.edu\speech.

To connect to the Speech share from off campus you must use VPN.

Why do I need a VPN connection?
VPN allows you to securely (via an encrypted connection) access university resources that would otherwise be inaccessible from the Internet or outside of the campus network. Examples of campus resources are:

  • Departmental or course related network folders
  • Specific Key-Served applications

What is my username and password?
Your username and password is the same as your UW-Stout username and password.

How do I setup my VPN client?
The pre-configured installer for the UW-Stout VPN client for Windows XP is available for download at Instructions for how to configure the client for Mac OSX can be found at Though other clients may work, we support only the VPN client software we distribute.

Is there a particular ISP I should use?
We do not recommend any ISP because there are no guarantees that any of the ISPs will preserve the port that allows the VPN to operate. However, the following ISPs were tested for VPN connectivity during the testing period and passed the VPN requirements at that particular time: Charter Communications, EarthLink/Mindspring, and SBC Internet Services.

What are the system requirements to use UW-Stout VPN services?

Windows:

  • PC compatible computer with a Pentium II processor
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP
  • 18MB hard disk space
  • 64MB RAM minimum
  • Cable or DSL network access

Macintosh OS-X (10.1-3 or later only):

  • PowerPC processor or newer
  • 10MB disk space
  • 128MB RAM minimum
  • Cable or DSL network access

UW-Stout VPN server, external web pages, and messenger clients
Once connected to VPN, it takes over your connection. You will not be able to browse outside of the UW-Stout network and any messenger clients will not connect while connected to the UW-Stout VPN. To restore your connectivity, close the VPN connection.

Is there an inactivity timeout on my VPN connection?
Currently, there is a 20 minute inactivity timeout on connections to the VPN server and a 4 hour maximum connect time limit. However, you may immediately reconnect if you are disconnected.
