II. PREREQUISITE: Interview with and consent of Chairperson
III. COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION: Operational principles of automatic
transmissions. Topics include: Theory of operation, repair and trouble shooting on
different transmissions.
IV. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to identify the components of an
automatic transmission drive train. Explain how to achieve different gear selections by
the use of planetary gear sets. Students will be able to explain the difference between
hydraulic pressures and follow hydraulic charts.
V. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton’s Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

· plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),

· any other behavior that violates academic integrity.
There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton’s policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VII. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Lectures and audiovisual presentations dealing with the function of components. There will be demonstrations, classroom discussion, small
group and individual instruction on disassembly/repair of vehicle and components.
VIII. COURSE PRACTICES REQUIRED: Reading: The student will be responsible to read hand outs and textbook materials. Writing: The student should maintain a notebook of
lecture topics for future reference. Course may be taught as face-to-face, media-based,
hybrid or online course.
IX. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Required: James D. Halderman, Automatic
Transmission and Transaxles Edition 6. To be supplied by instructor if needed: Handouts,
shop manuals, and specifications.
X. METHODS OF EVALUATING STUDENT PROGRESS: Grades are based on
attendance and participation in class. Quiz/tests will be given after lecture. Lab work and participation are essential for grade.

Attendance: Student attendance is critical for satisfactory completion of course work. If the student misses 4 classes, 4 tardies equal to 1 absence. This will result in a 10% loss in grade. If needed in certain cituations, the student will need to bring in proof of absence.
Tests: The student shall be responsible for contacting the instructor and making arrangements to make-up any missed examinations at the convenience of the instructor.
