Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes
January 13, 2015

A regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission of Newton, North Carolina was held on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Newton Recreation Center.

I.Call to Order:

Chairman Kyle Smith welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order.

II.Commission member Mickie Drum moved to approve the minutes from Tuesday, December 9, 2014 regular meeting, seconded by David Shugart, the motion was approved by unanimous vote.

III.Old Business

Activities Report – The Director gave a brief report on the following programs; youth basketball league, indoor youth and adult soccer programs, spring sports registration beginning January 5th, 2015.

Swimming Pool – The Director reminded members of the January 20th, 2015 City Council Meeting. The Council will vote to open or close the swimming pool during the meeting.

Tennis Court Rental – The Director gave members a copy of the proposed facility agreement between the Parks and Recreation Department and Debby Reynolds for use of Westside/Jaycee Tennis Courts. A copy will go the City Attorney for approval.

Mtn. Bike Trail – Parks and Recreation Director contacted Mecklenburg County, City of Hickory, and City of Gastonia, State Park Systems in Mooresville and Watauga County Parks and Recreation to see if they allowed night riding. City of Gastonia is the only one who allowed bikers to ride at night at one of their parks. After some discussion the Director and members agreed not to allow bike riding at night. This program/activity will be addressed again in the future.

February 10, 2015

Carolina Thread Trail Signage – The members did not like the sprayed stencil to be used on City sidewalks to mark Carolina Thread Trail. After looking at sprayed walks in Conover to mark Carolina Thread trail from Newton to Conover, they were not impressed. They wanted to look at other options such as signage, medallions, etc.

IV.New Business
Film Presentation – The Commission gained a better insight on how the department operates by viewing a 20 minute video covering programs, activities, parks, projects, facilities maintained by the Department and specialty events by other City Commission and Committees.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
