President’s Report 2011

August 26, 2011

Dear ACCTA Colleagues,

Welcome to the 24th Annual ACCTA Conference in beautiful Lake Geneva, Wisconsin! I know that many members are excited about our theme, Integrating Social Justice Issues in Internship Training: Expanding our Multicultural Competence. This theme was initially generated from an Affinity Group discussion at the 2009 conference and has been developed and implemented by the Board and membership with great anticipation. We have invited two very well-respected Keynote Speakers, Dr. Suzette Speight from the University of Akron and Dr. Elizabeth Vera from Loyola University - Chicago, to set the tone for our time together. Drs. Speight and Vera will be addressing us on the topic “Social Justice and Counseling Centers: Your Table is Ready”. We also have fourteen sessions offered during three concurrent sessions, with seven of these programs focusing on explicit social justice themes. We continue to offer unopposed presentations by this year’s Diversity Scholars, Dr. Inge Hansen from Stanford University and Dr. Agnes Kwong from the University of Washington. We will also continue to share our own experiences with one another through ACCTA traditions such as the Passages program and Culture Sharing. Finally, the conference will be followed by a Site Visitor Training offered by Drs. Joyce Illfelder-Kaye and Susan Zlotlow of the APA Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation on Wednesday, September 14th.

We are pleased to welcome invited guests and liaisons from national organizations with whom ACCTA has strong relationships: the Association for the Coordination of Counseling Center Clinical Services (ACCCCS) represented by Dr. Cynthia Cook, University of Houston - Clear Lake; the Association of Psychology Training Clinics (APTC) represented by Dr. Erica Wise, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD) represented by former ACCTA member Dr. Dan Jones, Appalachian State University; the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) represented by ACCTA member Dr. Joyce Illfelder-Kaye, Penn State University; the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs (CCPTP) represented by Dr. Johanna Nilsson, Ph.D., University of Missouri-Kansas City; and the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP) represented by Dr. David Cimbora, Rosemead School of Psychology, Biola University. We look forward to connecting with our returning liaisons as well as those who are attending the ACCTA conference for the first time.

The ACCTA conference also traditionally includes time to relax and connect with colleagues. Grand Geneva Resort has many recreational opportunities in addition to the excursions organized by the conference planners. It is hoped

that members find the conference to be a wonderful opportunity for stimulation and learning as well as a time for connection and rejuvenation. For those of you unable to attend the conference this year, we will provide details of the conference proceedings on the ACCTA website as soon as possible.

The following President’s Report reviews many of the important activities of our organization over the past year. The Report is organized into two main sections: Internal Business and Activities and External Activities, including ACCTA’s involvement in the national training community. I would like to acknowledge that none of these activities would be possible without the dedication and commitment of many ACCTA members. I would like to especially thank our Officers, Dr. Kathlyn Dailey, Past President, Dr. Julie Corkery, Secretary, and Dr. Tricia Besett-Alesch, Treasurer. Dr. Corkery and Dr. Besett-Alesch have written a Secretary’s Report and Treasurer’s Report respectively, which can be found in your conference folder and on the ACCTA website. Please review these important documents.

I would also like to thank our Board members, Drs. Kevin Bursley, Jon Brandon, Mary Ann Covey, Glade Ellingson, Ellie Hakim, Karen Hofmann, Natasha Maynard-Pemba, Rene Monteagudo, Cecilia Sun, and Matt Zimmerman. It is a pleasure and an honor to work closely with a group of such talented, hard-working and creative colleagues. Their excellent work is described in detail in the 2010-11 Board of Directors, Committee and Activity Reports. Numerous members have also contributed significantly to the work of the organization through our Standing Committees and by volunteering for specific tasks. We could not be successful without their generous help and commitment. Detailed summaries of these contributions are also contained in the 2010-11 Board of Directors, Committee and Activity Reports.

ACCTA’s Internal Business and Activities

In response to input from the membership as well as discussion among Board members, the ACCTA Board identified three goals for the organization for 2010-11: 1) To undertake an extensive redesign of the ACCTA website in an effort to increase ease of use as well as access to resources, and to allow for on-line payment for conference registration and dues as well as on-line voting; 2) to continue to develop and improve services for new members, due to a significant increase in member turnover in recent years and 3) to work closely with the Standing Committee on Diversity (SCD) to clarify the Committee’s mission and role and to better facilitate communication between the SCD, the membership and the Board. All of these goals were seen to be related to ongoing transitions within the organization, as ACCTA continues to grow in membership while striving to maintain its strong commitment to values of communication, affiliation and inclusion. Additional goals and tasks were generated as the year progressed, including implementing an electronic Continuing Education process and updating and revising ACCTA Policies and Procedures and Bylaws.

Website Redesign

Drs. Matt Zimmerman, Jon Brandon and Ellie Hakim were the “prime movers” in the Website Redesign project, with Dr. Tricia Besett-Alesch having significant involvement in her role as Treasurer. Dr. Zimmerman managed the project and communicated directly with Clarity Ventures, the company ACCTA contracted with for the redesign. As Chair of the Standing Committee on Training Resources, Dr. Hakim coordinated the reorganization of ACCTA’s extensive on-line training resources for the new website. Dr. Brandon assisted with many aspects of the project. Please review Dr. Zimmerman’s Website Content Coordinator report for more details regarding the implementation of this significant undertaking. The redesigned website was successfully launched on June 28, 2011, at a total cost of $20, 250, slightly over our approved budget. Anticipated technical difficulties are being managed and addressed with Clarity Ventures. The next stage of this task will include the updating and creation of forms as well as the training of content managers who will update the site on a continuous basis. The Board has been discussing mechanisms for managing the website in an ongoing way, resulting in a proposal being presented at this conference by the Standing Committee on Bylaws regarding the creation of a designated Board position and Standing Committee for this task. On behalf of the organization I would like to thank the Website Redesign Team for the tremendous amount of time and energy that has gone into the development and implementation of the new site, which will allow ACCTA to be a more efficient and transparent organization and to serve our members more effectively going forward.

New Member Programs

ACCTA has a longstanding history of welcoming new members in intentional ways. However, increasing numbers of new members in recent years motivated the organization to revisit our mechanisms for supporting and mentoring new Training Directors. The Chairs of New Member Programs, Drs. Mary Ann Covey, Glade Ellingson and Karen Hofmann, suggested that the “Buddy Program” be renamed the Conference Connector program, a name which more clearly designates the function of that role. An orientation session for new members as well an additional session for returning members will continue to be offered at the conference. In addition, a new Mentor Program for new Training Directors was developed for those seeking support and guidance in their new role in an ongoing way, outside of the annual conference. Eight experienced Training Directors volunteered to serve as mentors and seven new Training Directors expressed interested in the program and were matched with a Mentor, a wonderful outcome for the first year of this program. ACCTA will continue to attend to its efforts to reach out to new members in meaningful ways and welcomes feedback from new members regarding their needs and experiences. New members and Mentors will be identified at the conference by their name tags.

Standing Committee on Diversity

The Standing Committee of Diversity (SCD) has played a significant role in the life of the organization since its inception in the early 1990s. The SCD is responsible for promoting cultural diversity, multiculturalism, social justice, and advocacy issues within ACCTA and is involved in several initiatives and activities during the year, including the Diversity Mentor Scholars Program, Culture Sharing and the nomination of an SCD Slate for Board elections. As the SCD has evolved over the year, its membership has grown to the point that the majority of ACCTA members are also members of SCD. The size of the Committee has presented some challenges and questions in terms of the Committee’s ongoing role, mission and ability to function as a working group. The ACCTA Board and the current SCD Tri-Chairs, Dr. Brian Olowude, Geneva Reynaga-Abiko and Carmen Cruz, focused this year on efforts to increase communication between SCD and the Board and to assist in the clarification of the SCD’s role and function in ACCTA. Dr. Cecilia Sun, as the Board liaison to SCD, engaged in regular conference calls with the SCD Tri-Chairs to facilitate this process, and these conversations were regularly brought back to the Board for discussion. Efforts were made to clarify SCD’s current tasks and responsibilities, such as the organization of Culture Sharing and the Diversity Scholars Program, and to begin to consider which, if any, of these tasks could be “off-loaded” to the organization at large as they have become institutionalized to some degree. The SCD Tri-Chairs have also expressed an intention to revisit the SCD mission statement and to solicit feedback from SCD membership regarding the direction and role of the Committee. These tasks are ongoing and will be discussed at the SCD meeting at this year’s conference.

In addition to these identified goals, I would like to note the following highlights and accomplishments in 2010-11.

Continuing Education

Drs. Rene Monteagudo and Cecilia Sun successfully applied for ACCTA’s accreditation renewal as an APA Continuing Education sponsor. They also undertook the ambitious task of developing an electronic system for processing session evaluations and obtaining CE certificates. This system will be implemented at the 2011 conference, resulting in numerous benefits for ACCTA in terms of efficiency and sustainability. Please see Dr. Monteagudo’s Continuing Education Co-Chair Report for more information about this process.

Grants

Drs. Terri Rhodes, Jod Tawaditep and Tricia Besett-Alesch received notification of a grant award from the Board of Educational Affairs that will provide support for the keynote speakers at this year’s conference, Drs. Suzette Speight and Elizabeth Vera. Many thanks to Dr. Rhodes and her grant co-authors for this valuable contribution to our conference programming!

Membership

Dr. Ellie Hakim reports that ACCTA is currently 159 member programs strong. As of this writing, six new or reactivated programs joined the organization this year and nine programs transferred Training Director leadership. In addition to welcoming new members and managing membership changes, Dr. Hakim capably fields numerous inquiries regarding the benefits of ACCTA membership. For specific information related to new members and member programs, please see Dr. Hakim’s Membership Report. Please welcome new members and first time attendees to the conference!

Diversity Mentorship Scholarship Program

Drs. Tim Paquette and Tawa Sina successfully managed the challenging process of coordinating the application and review process for a very talented group of scholarship candidates. We look forward to welcoming Drs. Inge Hansen and Agnes Kwong to the conference.

Standing Committee on Bylaws, Policies and Procedures – The SCBPP, under the leadership of Dr. Glade Ellingson, started the year by undertaking a thorough revision of the Policies and Procedures Manual. Later in the spring, the committee initiated a Bylaws review, resulting in five proposals to amend the Bylaws which will be presented at the conference. The most significant of these proposals involves the creation of a new Standing Committee on Website Management and the designation of a Board position to chair this committee. These important proposals will be discussed at the conference and voted upon online after the conference.

Standing Committee on Conferences – Dr. Terri Rhodes and her committee have once again done an outstanding job planning and coordinating our current and future conference experiences. In addition, Dr. Rhodes took on the role of Conference Host this year when Dr. Jod Tawaditep was not able to attend the conference. I cannot say enough about the hard work and commitment demonstrated by Dr. Rhodes and her committee, from making hotel arrangements to coordinating the meals, excursions and registration process, in addition to general “trouble-shooting”. Dr. Rhodes also coordinated the site selection process for the 2012 conference in Baltimore. The 2012 conference will mark the beginning of our working relationship with Debra Nolan/AMC Source, our new conference planner. We look forward to working with Ms. Nolan and benefitting from her negotiation skills and planning expertise.
