JOHN All of John and Christina's children were born 1 mile west of Lithopolis, Fairfield County, Ohio.

Source Source: "Data Provided by Mary Anne (Shannon) Klein of the Blackwood line", John came to the United States on the ship "Mars" of Greenock, Scotland, Capt. Cleperton, commanding. Left Carrickfergus 12 May 1832, arrived in Baltimore, Maryland 3 July 1832. He purchased 107 acres of land in Madison Township, Franklin Co., Ohio. He worked on the National Highway (Route 40). He taught school "down on the Rarey farm in the old log school house in Pickaway Co." in 18361838. He also taught at Middletown and at the Brick or Glick Church. He taught grammar and was the first to teach that in that part of the country. He invented the first hinge harrow, first corn planter (Pat. 1854), gang plow (Pat. 1871), and the three horse hitch (Pat. 1872. He made the first meat grinders in the country and did most of the surveying for the neighborhood for miles around him. He was an elder in the Lithopolis Presbyterian Church for 42 years. Possibly died July 27th according to the Lancaster Gazette.

On 17 April 1879 he was appointed guardian for his imbecile niece, Ellen B. (Shannon) McGarity.

The home of John and Christina at 90 Brown Street has been restored, as of July 2002, and looks great. John and Christina owned lots 105 & 106 from 3 March 1855 until 29 September 1866 when lot 105 was sold to Long & Smith (Etal) and lot 106 to the trustees of the Presbyterian Church. The property owned by Henry Glick from 1 June 1816 to 28 January 1819 and later several others.

Reuben died 16Aug 1907 in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, and was buried in Lithopolis (Baugher) Cemetery, Lithopolis, Fairfield Co., Ohio. He married Jennie E. WELTON 22May 1862 in Lithopolis, Fairfield Co., Ohio. She was born 22Sep 1840 in Welton Valley south of Groveport, Franklin Co., Ohio. She was the daughter of Jesse WELTON and Mary RAMSEY. Jennie died 3Nov 1931 in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, and was buried in Lithopolis (Baugher) Cemetery, Lithopolis, Fairfield Co., Ohio.

Dufferin married (2) Effie Grace BUMPUS 15Oct 1927. She was born 19Dec 1880 in Mount Vernon, Linn Co., Iowa. She was the daughter of H. Alexander BUMPUS and Alice WORLEY. Effie died 17Feb 1933 in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, and was buried in Mount Vernon, Linn Co., Iowa.

EFFIE died of shock from extensive third degree body burns. Her clothing caught fire when gasoline exploded which cleaning a hat. Dufferin died 12Oct 1953, and was buried in Lithopolis (Baugher) Cemetery, Lithopolis, Fairfield Co., Ohio.

Page 45a, gives a transcription of death article : "JENNIE (Welton) BLACKWOOD Mrs. Jennie (Welton) Blackwood passed away Friday morning, November 13, 1831 at her home, 173 west 9th Avenue, aged 91 years. She was born September 22, 1840 in Franklin County, Ohio, south of Groveport in the Welton Valley, where her grandfather, John Welton, had taken up land on his emigration from Virginia. She was married to Reuben Blackwood in 1862, who preceded her to the better world in 1907. A daughter, Mrs. W. S. Smith, also preceded her eight years ago. She is survived by three children, Mrs. Carrie E. La Ross, Mrs., A. Clarke Hunter and Dufferin R. Blackwood; also seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Twentyfive years of her early married life was spent in Lithopolis, where she took an active part in church work and also in many of the activities of the fillage (sic) life. After removing to Columbus forty years ago, she became a charter member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, where she was active until her declining years prevented such duties." etc. Gives burial information as Lithopolis Cemetery. Page 20 gives marriage date, spouse and four children (Carrie Emaretta, Della May, Annis Evaline and Dufferin R.). Pages 2324, "My father, Reuben Blackwood, was the oldest in his Father's family and was born in the log cabin in Pickaway County, Ohio, July 29, 1839. He lived on the Blackwood farm, just over the line in Franklin County, until he was about sixteen when the family moved into the village of Lithopolis where they lived four years. He went to school to his father at Middletown and to the academy in Lithopolis".... "Mathematical studies were his favorites, and he was also of an inventive mind. He first learned the cabinet making trade, but after his marriage to my mother, Jennie E. Welton, May 22, 1862, they lived for a year or so on her farm in the Welton Valley, then moved to the village of Lithopolis. During the year on the farm he was called out in the militia when Morgan's men came, at time of the Civil War, but only went as far as Columbus, (They were drilled near Groveport) when by paying a substitute, he was excused on account of his wife's illness. My father became a tinner, buying the store in Lithopolis and built a comfortable home on the adjoining lot, where the three younger children were born; I, being the eldest, first saw the light in what was then known as the Willis property on top of the hill on the south side of Church Street. My father was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Lithopolis and gave many years of service to it in different capacities, as choir leader with his sweet tenor voice, sometimes as organist and at times acted as sexton. He was rather stern but conscientious, had no bad habits; he was timid in expressing himself in conversation. About 1890 he sold his business interests in Lithopolis and removed to Columbus where he became a building contractor."

Stevenson, August 1936, chapter on the original town, page 28, "Perry Lehman was the hardware merchant for his lifetime. He was first a partner of Reuben Blackwood, and then of George Weiser. This firm was as widely known as the Village itself." Page 29, "The next house to the north was erected by Reuben Blackwood about the year 1870. It was his home for many years, and here he raised his family, in his older years removing to Columbus." Page 56, "I think it was immediately after the civil war that Reuben Blackwood, the son of John Blackwood, married a village girl, the daughter of widow Gibbey, bought the machinery for the manufacture of tinware, and the building it occupied, from Parmele Bailey, the widow of Amos Bailey, recently deceased, and continued that business. He joined with himself in partnership, his brotherinlaw, John Green, and they added to the business, that of putting on metal and slate roofing, then coming into vogue. Both moved to the Village."

Source THE TIMES newspaper, dated Wednesday, January 12, 1983, has an article regarding Reuben Blackwood's house in Lithopolis. The citizens tried to raise money to have the house moved before it was to be torn down to make more room for Wagnalls Memorial building, estimates being from $25,000 to $30,000 to move the decaying brick structure. It was not accomplished and consequently torn down. It had been considered "in the 1876 Fairfield County atlas as a community landmark" and the "only house in Lithopolis that features Italian architecture." There is a copy of a watercolor depiction of the home.
