  8. THEME

THEME – “Oranges” by Gary Soto.

The THEME in the poem is “LOVE.” “LOVE is the THEME. The EVIDENCE that this is the theme is:

EXAMPLE 1 from “ORANGES:”

  1. “______”
  2. “______”
  3. “______”

These are examples of the kind of LOVE that may exist between a young boy and a young girl. This is, according to the author, “his first time” with a girl so it may be LOVE that may NOT be forgotten. This kind of LOVE implies a desire to be together, walk together, make another person happy, sacrifice for the other person, provide for the other person, and human contact – holding hands.

There is in the story another kind of LOVE: The love of an adult (the sales lady) for a member of the community. The sales lady shows LOVE as UNDERSTANDING. The sales lady prefers to keep silent instead of embarrassing the author reclaiming more money. “______”

In fact, I KNOW about these two kinds of LOVE:

YOUR VERY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCES.

SUMMARY—

  1. IDENTIFY the THEME
  2. EXAMPLES – “QUOTATIONS”
  3. EXPLAIN the examples. In your OWN WORDS.
  4. MY VERY OWN EXPERIENCE.

The Poem “Fair Trade” by Gary Soto.

The THEME of this poem is also LOVE. And like in the previous POEM, the author also writes about TWO kinds of LOVE.

There is the LOVE expressed by BOY- GIRL and, in this poem by MAN – WOMAN.

EXAMPLES:

“______”

“______”

“______”

In this second poem, the author and now HIS WIFE are in the apartment they have together. There is sunshine, it represents happiness, a good feeling of LOVE, the author calls his LOVE “madness in his head,”there is pride because there is MONEY.

LOVE is generous: meal at a restaurant, money in the pocket, coins warmed by the sun.

There is a second kind of LOVE – COMMUNITY LOVE.

“______”

FINISH by writing:

  1. IN YOUR OWN WORDS, explain the “EXAMPLES”/“QUOTATIONS”
  2. RELATE the poem to your very own personal experience.
