WHATISTHENYSSMAFESTIVAL?

TheNewYorkStateSchoolMusicAssociation (NYSSMA)annualSolo and Ensemble Festivalisan opportunityforstudentstoreceiveanobjectiveevaluationofa musical performance.ParticipatinginNYSSMArequiresastudenttoperforma solo,scales,andsight-readingforanadjudicator.Thestudentwillreceive anumericalandwrittenevaluation.WhileNYSSMAisopentoall students,pleasediscusswiththeschoolmusicteacheroraprivateteacher regardingwhetheryourchildisreadytoparticipateinthistypeofevaluation.StudentswhoparticipateinDistrict-organizedmusicgroupsshould consultwiththeirteachers.Studentsstudyingprivatelyshouldconsult with their private teachers and register through a school music teacher.

Pleasenotethatwhileteachersareableto help students with their solos in school, teachers may not be able to prepare students one-on-one.

WHATMUSICSHOULDBEPERFORMED?

Music selectedmustappearintheNYSSMAMANUAL, Edition31;July1,2015.Teachersshouldbeconsultedastoappropriate levelandsuggestedtitles.Pleaseverifythat allsolosare in the manual toensureparticipation in thefestival.TWOCOPIESofthemusicshouldbepurchased,onefor theperformerandoneforthejudge.Allsheetmusicmustbe ORIGINALCOPIES.

Levels1-4:Ratedona28pointscaleandcategorized as:

ApproximatelyoneweekbeforetheFestivalyouwillreceiveamapto thehostingschoolandappropriatepaperwork,includingyourscheduled time.
