Competitive Events

Morning Events

The intent of the morning events is to test the Scouts ability to perform various lashings in practical settings to make the aware that knots and lashings are tools they can use in many situations. Rules for some events allow for some “creativity” as the patrol solves the problem.

There is flexibility in the morning schedule so that patrols can avoid standing around for an event to open up. The morning events must be done as a patrol. Some patrols may choose to begin with the field events and return to camp to lash their “gadgets” later in the morning. Other patrols may start in camp and go to the events later in the morning. Nothing would prevent a patrol from bringing their gadget materials along and working on them while waiting for an event.

Each patrol must complete the morning events as a group. The patrol flag must accompany them to each event and patrols will give their patrol yell at each event.. The flag may be laid aside at each event, and each event station is a safe place.

Log Hoist:

TIMED EVENT: Throw a rope over a crossbar 15 feet away. Run up and tie a timber hitch to a log. Hoist the log free of the ground and hitch the rope to a peg at your starting point. The log must remain clear of the ground for 20 seconds..

Bell Ring:

TIMED EVENT:Using knots and lashings, build a ladder and ring a bell hung 11 feet above the ground. You must ring the bell with your hand. Provide your own building materials.

Log Pull Relay:

TIMED EVENT: Teams are arranged an equal number of Scouts at each end of the course. The first Scout ties the rope to a log and pulls the log to the other end of the course to be pulled back by the second Scout, and so on. The rope must traverse the course a total of eight times (four back and forth). If the patrol does not have eight Scouts, some Scouts may go more than once.

Flagpole Building:

TO BE SCORED BY HEIGHT: Flagpole contest for the tallest flagpole using round lashings and natural logs (no telephone poles or other materials). The pole must stand for at least two minutes and must not be tied to any supporting devices (cars, tree, blocks). Patrols may use up to four guy lines tied to stakes in the ground. Provide your own poles, ropes and stakes.

Ropemaking Challenge

Timed Event: Your patrol will be given nine pieces of twine. Your patrol must weave them together to make a rope. Provide your own manually operated rope making machine.

Remote Knotting

TIMED EVENT: Stake out a 10 foot radius circle around a tree, and give the patrol a 100 foot rope. Without entering the circle, the patrol must tie a clove hitch around their tree. Also outside the circle, the other patrol members can give advice and raise the rope if necessary.

Blind Knots

TIMED EVENT: Eight to ten different knots will be in bags on a table. The goal is to recognize all of the knots without looking at the knots. The first Scout will come forth and try to identify a knot by putting their hand in the bag and feeling the knot. Once the Scout has felt the knot, he will tell the judge the name of the knot. The judge shall tell the Scout whether he was correct or incorrect. If the Scout was correct, the judge shall remove the knot from the table. If the Scout is incorrect, the judge will not tell the Scout the name of the knot and the knot will remain on the table. The Scout shall proceed to the back of the line and the next scout shall attempt to identify a knot. The patrol must continue until all knots are identified. The knots are: overhand knot, square knot, granny knot, two half hitches, taut line hitch, sheet bend, slip knot, clove hitch, timber hitch, whipping.

Trebuchet

TIMED EVENT: With knots and lashings, construct a trebuchet using materials provided by your troop. Hit the designated target three times with balls provided by the judge.

Advanced Knot Tying

TIMED EVENT: The first Scout will come forth and pull the name of a knot out of a bag. The Scout shall then tie the knot. The judge shall tell the Scout whether he was correct or incorrect. If the Scout was correct, the judge shall remove the slip of paper with the knot’s name. If the Scout is incorrect, the judge will return the slip of paper to the bag. The Scout shall proceed to the back of the line and the next scout shall draw a knot name and attempt to tie it. Knots are: Back (or end splice), eye splice, short splice, sheep shank, fisherman’s knot. double fisherman’s knot, trucker’s hitch, one hand bowline, clove hitch in the middle of the rope (with loops), water knot, figure 8 loop.

H Trestle Lashing

TIMED EVENT: Lash together an H frame using square and diagonal lashings

A Minute to Win it:

Have you ever watched “A Minute to Win it” on television. Patrols will line up in relay formation. The first Scout will draw slip from the jar. He will proceed to the materials for the appropriate challenge and will then have one minute to successfully complete the challenge. If he is unsuccessful, a second Scout will try. After two unsuccessful attempts (or after succeeding on the first try), the patrol will select another challenge from the jar. The patrol will complete as many challenges as possible within the allotted time.

Troop or Patrol Project.

Each troop shall spend the afternoon building a project using knots and lashings. For judging purposes, Scouts must be able to correctly identify all knots and/or lashings on their project.

Upon completion, the patrol/troop must label each of their gadgets with the following information on an index card:

  • Troop/Patrol name
  • SPL/Patrol Leader’s name
  • Names of boys who assisted in building the structure/gadget
  • Knots/Lashings used on the structure/gadget

Structures will be evaluated at the beginning of the afternoon event session. Structures will be evaluated on the basis of:

  • Appearance, neatness of lashing
  • Correctness of lashing
  • Strength of the structure (sufficient for intended purpose)
  • Originality
