How to use Bus & Ferry Schedules

Schedules for Metro Transit routes are provided in PDF format on this website. These PDFs look very similar to the printed Rider's Guide, which you can find at retail outlets around HRM. If you are comfortable using the Rider's Guide, you should have no difficulties using the online version of our schedules. If this is your first time using our schedules, or if you have unanswered questions, we hope that the following overview will help:

·  Each route listing identifies a selection of stops or timing points along the route.

·  Below the stops are listed the times when buses are scheduled to leave that point throughout the day.

·  Reading from left to right will tell you how long it takes for your bus to travel between timing points.

·  Reading down the columns indicates how often the bus runs.

·  Dashes in a column indicate that the bus does not service that timepoint on that trip.

·  Times in light face type mean morning or AM, while bold type indicates PM or afternoon and evening times.

In addition there are special notes or conditions that apply to specific routes.

Please check any footnotes to see if they apply to the route and times you wish to travel. The four digit number at the top of the column is that stop’s GoTime number. When you dial 480 plus the GoTime number you will hear when the next two buses, for each route, will be leaving that stop.

Metro Transit's GoTime system is an automated system that tracks conventional buses in real time.

How To Go With Go Time

New GoTime System Testing in Progress.

Metro Transit is in the process of replacing its GoTime system, which tracks bus location & provides real time departure information to passengers. Throughout this transition, passengers have been receiving scheduled time from both the old and new GoTime system.

In conjunction with the system upgrade, Metro Transit has replaced all of the bus stop signs, featuring the new Metro Transit logo and a new prefix of 480 to access the GoTime system. Metro Transit passengers should only use the GoTime system with the 480 prefix + the new bus stop number found on the new signs. The old prefix does not work with the new GoTime numbers. The new GoTime numbers for all of the major timepoints can be found in Metro Transit's Riders’ Guide or on the Schedules & Route Maps page.

The new GoTime system will continue to provide scheduled time only until testing of the new system is complete and the proper hardware is installed on all regular buses. Once the new system is fully implemented, it will be much more efficient for both operations and passengers.

Metro Link for Sackville:

Route #185 Sackville Link provides two directional service from the new Sackville Terminal (with a stop at Windmill Rd. at Wright Ave. in Burnside) to Scotia Square, Monday to Friday, 6AM to 12 midnight, 10 minute frequency during peak hours and 30 minute off-peak service. No service on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

What is a transfer?

A transfer is a piece of paper that allows you to connect to other buses or ferries to complete your one-way trip without paying an additional fare.

Ferry and Access-A-Bus passengers may also receive transfers.

Coloured transfers are valid for up to 90 minutes after the last time point on the route and can be used inbound or outbound on any Metro Transit routes and services.

Punch marks specify the issue date, while the tear away indicates the transfer’s expiration time.

Metro Transit asks that passengers request the transfer when boarding the bus or ferry.

Additional transfer fare is required for MetroLink and Community Transit services.

Safe Trip Tips:

A few simple steps you can follow that help make your trip a safe one:

J  Plan your route ahead of time.

J  Have your fare ready. Do not open your purse or wallet.

J  Never run for a bus – it's better to wait for the next bus and avoid a serious accident. If an operator sees you and can stop safely, they will do so.

J  Be careful that backpacks, bags, purse straps or coats don't get caught in the doors as you get on or off the bus.

J  In slippery winter conditions, be extra careful getting on and off the bus.

J  Never walk directly in front of or behind a bus – the operator and other drivers may not see you.

On the bus:

J  Hold on to the grab rails! Sometimes an operator has to brake suddenly.

J  Keep the aisle clear of tripping hazards such as bags, backpacks and briefcases.

J  Stand back from the front of the bus so the operator has a clear view of the doorway and mirrors.

J  For safety reasons, passengers cannot be barefoot on the bus, nor wear skates or roller-blades.

J  Request a Stop - After 6 pm, passengers can ask the operator to disembark along the route other than a designated stop if it is safe to do so – just let the operator know in advance.

J  Sit where you can see your upcoming stop, and disembark at the next one if you notice a suspicious person at the stop - if you feel apprehensive, sit near the front of the bus.

J  If you're lost or ill, being harassed or threatened, or observe any suspicious activity on the bus, speak to the operator who will radio for help.

Request Stop

Initiated by the Metro Transit Safe Ride Committee, Request Stop is offered to unaccompanied persons; particularly women, children & seniors using regular service after 6 pm.

If you wish to disembark at a location other than a regular bus stop along the route, speak with the operator at least one stop before our desired stop. For safety reasons, please exit via the front door of the bus.

In order to meet your request, the operator must be able to stop safely and obey transit safety regulations. Therefore, the operator has the right to deny your request and choose an alternate stopping point.

Backpack Safety

Passengers with backpacks are asked to be considerate of other passengers, as backpacks take up additional space in the bus. If possible, please remove backpack while on the bus and use caution as to not hit a fellow passenger.

Smoking

Passengers are not permitted to smoke while on transit vehicles, bus shelters and terminals, or ferry terminals in accordance with the Fares & Property By-law, prohibiting smoking in public transportation vehicles and facilities.

Violators will be subject to a maximum penalty of $1000 under the by-law.

Food and Beverages

Food and beverages are not permitted on buses for the purpose of consumption due to specific safety issues; however, they are allowed on the ferries. We recognize some passengers may bring food or beverages from home and ask that they store the items in containers with secure, safety lids.

Clothing

Passengers are required to wear a shirt or top and footwear while travelling on Metro Transit vehicles.

Other Policies

J  Waste bags, including compost, recycling or garbage are not permitted on any Metro Transit vehicles.

J  Passengers using audio/video equipment are asked to use earphones and adjust the volume accordingly as to not disturb other passengers.

J  Passengers must refrain from using profanity.

J  Passengers entitled to a reduced fare MUST present required identification upon boarding. If ID is not available, the full adult fare must be paid.

J  Rollerblades are prohibited on Metro Transit vehicles.
