Matthew Storey
Native Title Services Victoria
Matthew Storey is CEO of Native Title Services Victoria Ltd. NTSV represents Victorian Traditional Aboriginal Owners in claims under the Commonwealth’s Native Title Act and the Victorian Traditional Owners Settlement Act. He is also a Director and Executive Member of the National Native Title Council and a Legal Officer in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve.
Prior to taking up the position as NTSV CEO in early 2012, Matthew lived in the Northern Territory for nearly 25 years. While there he worked primarily in the area of Aboriginal Land Rights for many years as a Senior Crown Law Officer with the Solicitor for the Northern Territory. He also worked as Associate Professor and Head of Law at the Territory’s Charles Darwin University. He was President of the Law Society of the Northern Territory and a Director of the Law Council of Australia.
He has also previously worked as Director of the NT Anti-Discrimination Commission and for the North Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service where he was primarily responsible for the “Stolen Generations cases”. He has been a member of a number of other professional bodies including the Council of Australian Law Deans, the NT Law Reform Committee and the National Board of the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association.
Mr Storey practices in the area of natural resources law; specialising in property, mining, environment and native title law. He has lectured, published and practised in these areas for many years. He has extensive litigation experience both instructing and appearing as counsel in a before a broad range of courts and tribunals.
He completed a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws course at CDU in 1995. He was awarded his Bachelor of Laws with first class honours. He was also awarded the Attorney General’s Medal and University Medal in that year. Mr Storey has subsequently completed a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the ANU and a Master of Laws specialising in environmental law from Macquarie University for which he was also awarded the Vice Chancellor’s commendation. He has completed a Graduate Diploma in Energy and Natural Resources Law at the University of Melbourne.
