In and around Copenhagen there are plenty of food-related

companies that are not very climate friendly, clean or socially responsible. Many of them promote and take advantage of the false solutions proposed by the UNFCCC.

Supermarkets

"The power in the food system lies in the hands of the supermarkets, food processors and other corporate middle-men."

Whilst supermarkets dominate the food supply chain in some countries and in some commodity lines, elsewhere it is the big transnational food processors such as Kraft, Nestle, Altria (formerly Philip Morris), Unilever, Procter and Gamble and Cargill who hold the power in the supply chain.

Growing evidence indicates, however, that the success of these companies is based on trading practices that are having serious consequences for suppliers, farmers, overseas workers, local shops and the environment.

The store chains owned by Dansk Supermarked:

•Netto - discount supermarkets

•Føtex - large supermarkets (with many non food items)

•Bilka - hypermarkets

•Tøj & Sko - clothing and shoe stores

•A-Z - non food only hypermarkets

•Salling - department stores

From Dansk Supermarked leaflet:

“To ensure that we can continue to offer products of the highest quality and at the best prices, we belong to the international purchasing associations AMS , Agentrics and Maersk Procurement.”

•Strict supplier requirements A supplier to Dansk Supermarked has access to Denmark’s most attractive stores and the chance of national marketing. In return, we impose a number of requirements. We want to offer our customers only the best with correlation between price and quality. In 2006, Dansk Supermarked joined the BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) and in the process acquired a set of ethical rules (Code of Conduct), which our suppliers must meet. The code of conduct specifies the minimum requirements for the social and environmental standards of suppliers and their sub-suppliers.

Novozymes

Nordrefasanvej 215, Kobenhavn

Novozymes A/S Hilleroedgade 31, 2200 Copenhagen N

the site only produces enzymes. Since Novo Nordisk and Novozymes became two independent firms, there is no longer any pharmaceutical production at Fuglebakken.Enzymes for the baking industry and for use in e.g. cola are just two examples of the enzymes that are made at Fuglebakken.

Biotechnology: driving society towards a bio-based economy. Agricultural residues as source to replace oil in everything from fuels to chemicals, plastics, packaging, and pharmaceuticals

Climate Consortium Denmark, the Danish Agricultural Council, and Novozymes want to highlight the role that biotechnology can play for the agricultural sector. “In the run-up to COP15 this strategic partnership will highlight the modern and efficient agricultural production practices.” Finn Mortensen, Executive Director of Climate Consortium Denmark, underlines the importance of Danish Agricultural Council and Novozymes now forming a united front to focus on Denmark’s food industry and the future opportunities to be found in biotechnology. One example is enzymes for animal feed.

Novozymes is also working to develop microorganisms and technologies for maximizing the energy yield from agricultural manure for the production of electricity, heat, and transport as well as high-quality fertilizer. The starting point for the partnership is May 27 in Copenhagen, where the Danish Agricultural Council together with IFAP, the International Federation of agriculture Producers, will host a global climate summit, Climate Change – Farmers' Solutions. Subsequently, a wide range of experts, researchers, international food producers, and decision-makers will help to develop the vision that will be presented at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen this December, COP15, as the Danish food industry’s recommendation concerning production of food.

“Governmental incentives are needed to support technological innovation and pilot projects to enable the industry to deliver, build infrastructure and pave the way for vehicles that can run on biofuel.”

New deal to make biofuel based on plant residues commercially viable: Inbicon and Novozymes have signed an agreement to further develop and optimize the process and the enzymes for converting plant residues to fuel.

Assisted by the Partnership for Biofuels, Inbicon, Novozymes, Danisco and Statoil have joined forces to deliver advanced biofuels based on wheat straw that will power half the official fleet at the COP15 climate conference this December. The cars, supplied by Volvo from their existing FlexiFuel Vehicle range, will be fueled with the new bioethanol produced at the new Inbicon plant in Kalundborg.

This fall Novozymes and alliance partner DSM Nutritional Products are launching an enhanced phytase feed enzyme, RONOZYME®NP, to the European market. The product makes it easier for animals to absorb nutrients in feed.

Facts about Novozymes:

Novozymes is the world leader in bioinnovation with over 700 products used in 130 countries.
