Title: Picturing Polygons

Objective: The student will be able to draw and identify critical attributes of regular polygons utilizing database and graphics.
Timeline: Approximately two 45 minute class periods

Procedures:
Getting Started
- Open Microsoft Access by clicking Start ProgramsMicrosoftAccess.
- Click Blank Database in the Task Pane on the right side of the screen.
- Navigate to the student's folder so that the student's name is seen in the Save in box.
- In the Filename box, type: Polygons.
- Click Create.
Add Field Names and Data Types
- Double click Create Table by using Design View in the Database window.
- Type: Name of Polygon for the first Field Name.
- Click in the Data Type box and select Look Up Wizard.
- Select I will type in the values that I want.
- Click Next.
- Click in the bar below Col 1 and type: Triangle.
- Tab to the second row and type: Square.
- Tab to the next row and type:Pentagon.
- Tab to the next row and type: Hexagon.
- Repeat the procedure for Septagon/Heptagon, Octagon, Nonagon, and Decagon.
- Click Next
- Click Finish.
- Type: Number of Sides in the second Field Name box.
- Select Text as the Data Type.
- Type: Number of Vertices for the third Field Name.
- Select Text as the Data Type.
- Type: Parallel Lines as the next Field Name.
- Choose Yes/No as the Data Type.
- Type: Perpendicular Lines for the next Field Name.
- Choose Yes/No for the Data Type.
- Follow the same procedure for Field Names Right Angles,Acute Angles,Obtuse Angles.
- After selecting Yes/No for the Obtuse Angles data type, type: Picture for the next Field Name.
- Choose OLE Object for the Data Type.
Changing the View
- Go to ViewDatasheet View.
- Click Yes to save.
- Type:Student Name-Polygons for the Table Name.
- Select No in the Primary Key window.
- Close the table (lowest X).
- In the Objects section, select Forms.
- Double-click Create Form by using Wizard.
- Click the two double right arrows.
- Select Next.
- Choose Justified.
- Click Next.
- Select a Style and click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Minimize the database. (Click the minus button at the top right of the window).
Getting Started in Microsoft Word
- Go to Start Programs MicrosoftWord.
- Go to View Toolbars Drawing. (If Drawing is already checked, DO NOT click or the check will be removed).
- Close the Task Pane on the right side of the screen.
- Go to Tools Options General tab.
- Uncheck the Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes box.
- Click OK.
- Go to FileSaveas.
- In the Save in box, navigate to the student's folder.
- In the Filename box, type: Polygon 1.
- Click Save.
Drawing Tools and Transfer to Access
- Click the AutoShapes button on the bottom toolbar.
- Select Basic Shapes and choose the Triangle button.
- Move the cursor to the document and click and drag to draw a triangle.
- Choose the down arrow beside the Fill color button (paint bucket).
- Select More Fill Colors and choose a color.
- Move the mouse to the center of the triangle and right click.
- Choose Copy.
- Click the Student Name-Polygon button (Access file) at the bottom of the screen.
- Right-click in the Picture section and select Paste.
- Fill in all other information about the triangle on the form.
- Click the Polygon 1 button at the bottom of the screen.
- Select AutoShapes and choose Basic Shapes again.
- Choose the Square.
- Move the cursor to the document and click and drag to create a square. (Hold the Shift key while clicking and dragging to draw a perfect square).
- Select the Fill color button and choose a color.
- Move to the center of the square and right-click.
- Select Copy.
- Click the Student Name-Polygon button at the bottom of the screen.
- Click the Add Record button in the top tool bar.
- Right click in the picture section of the new form and select Paste.
- Fill in all information about squares.
- Go to FileSave.
- Repeat for Pentagon, Hexagon, and Octagon.
- To draw a Septagon and a Nonagon, go to AutoShapes > Lines > Freeform .
- Click and draw the first side. Click again to start a different side until the shape is complete.
- Continue until all shapes are complete.
- Go to FileSave.
Printing
- Go to File PrintPreview to see how the forms will print.
- Go to FilePrint.
