The safety rules contained on these pages have been prepared to protect you in your daily work. Employees are to follow these rules, review them often and use good common sense in carrying out their duties.

General Safety Rules
1.When crossing vehicle pathways or passing through loading areas, keep clear of all moving forklifts, trucks, cars or Ground Service Equipment (GSE).
2.When performing work from a ladder, face the ladder and do not lean backward or sideways from the ladder.
3.Stack heavy or bulky storage containers on middle and lower shelves of the storage rack.
4.Use a spotter to help guide carts around corners and through narrow aisles.
5.Push loaded or empty carts, rather than pulling the carts.
6.Do not let items overhang from shelves into walkways.
7.Remove one object at a time from shelves.
8.Place items on shelves so that they lie flat and do not lean against each other.
Lifting Procedures
1.Plan the move before lifting; remove obstructions from your chosen pathway.
2.Test the weight of the load before lifting by pushing the load along its resting surface.
3.If the load is too heavy or bulky, use lifting and carrying aids such as hand trucks, dollies, pallet jacks and carts, or get assistance from a co-worker.
4.If assistance is required to perform a lift, coordinate and communicate your movements with those of your co-worker.
5.Position your feet 6 to 12 inches apart with one foot slightly in front of the other.
6.Face the load.
7.Bend at the knees, not at the back.
8.Keep your back straight.
9.Get a firm grip on the object with your hands and fingers. Use handles when present.
10.Never lift anything if your hands are greasy or wet.
11.Wear protective gloves when lifting objects with sharp corners or jagged edges.
12.Hold objects as close to your body as possible.
13.Perform lifting movements smoothly and gradually; do not jerk the load.
14.If you must change direction while lifting or carrying the load, pivot your feet and turn your entire body. Do not twist at the waist.
15.Set down objects in the same manner as you picked them up, except in reverse.
16.Do not lift an object from the floor to a level above your waist in one motion. Set the load down on a table or bench and then adjust your grip before lifting it higher.
17.Slide materials to the end of the tailgate before attempting to lift them off of a pick-up truck. Do not lift over the walls or tailgate of the truck bed.
Housekeeping
1.Sweep up shavings from around equipment such as drill presses, lathes or planers by using a broom and a dustpan.
2.Do not store or leave items on stairways.
3.Do not block or obstruct stairwells, exits or accesses to safety and emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers or fire alarms.
4.Straighten or remove rugs and mats that do not lie flat on the floor.
5.Return tools to their storage places after use.
6.Use caution signs/cones to barricade slippery areas such as freshly mopped floors.
7.Do not use flammable liquids such as gasoline, acetone or paint thinner for cleaning floors.
8.Use only metal receptacles labeled "Oily Rags Only" for disposal of oily shop rags.
9.Store liquid containers labeled "Flammable" only in cabinets, rooms or buildings labeled "Flammable Storage".
Office Safety
1.Close drawers and doors immediately after use.
2.Use the handle when closing doors, drawers and files.
3.Do not block your view by carrying large or bulky items; use a dolly or hand truck or get assistance from a fellow employee.
4.Use a ladder or step stool to retrieve or store items that are located above your head.
5.Use a cord cover or tape the cord down when running electrical or other cords across aisles, between desks or across entrances/exits.
6.Use handrails when ascending or descending stairs or ramps.
7.Obey all posted safety and danger signs.
8.Clean up spills or leaks immediately by using a paper towel, rag or a mop and bucket.
9.Follow procedures posted on copiers when disposing of duplicating solvents for copy machines.
Hazardous Material Safety
1.Follow the instructions on the label and in the corresponding Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for each chemical product used in your workplace.
2.Use personal protective clothing or equipment such as neoprene gloves, rubber boots, shoe covers, rubber aprons, and protective eyewear, when using chemicals labeled "Flammable", "Corrosive", "Caustic" or "Poisonous".
3.Before pouring, dispensing or transferring any liquid from a bulk container labeled "Flammable", observe the following safety procedure:
Only use red color-coded, metal containers for transferring the liquid.
Electrically ground and bond the containers as follows:
(1) Attach the clip at one end of the grounding wire to the rim of the dispensing container and then attach the clip at the other end of the grounding wire to a ground source, such as a ground driven steel stake.
(2) Attach the clip at one end of the bonding wire to the rim of the dispensing container and then attach the clip at the other end of the bonding wire to the rim of the receiving container.
(3) You are now ready to dispense the liquid from the bulk container into the opened receiving container. Upon completion, replace the lid on the receiving container and remove the bonding wire.
4.Do not perform "hot work", such as welding, metal grinding or other spark producing operations, within 50 feet of containers labeled "Flammable" or "Combustible".
5.Wear chemical respirators, protective clothing and gloves when spraying fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
General Rules on Airport Premises
1.Do not exceed posted speed limits.
2.Wear safety glasses, goggles, or face shields when operating electrical powered tools.
3.Wear dust masks, safety glasses or goggles when using bench grinders, hand grinders or sanders.
4.Wear earplugs or earmuffs in areas posted "Hearing Protection Required" or when operating tugs, forklifts, Ground Service Equipment (GSE) and near aircraft.
5.Always work in well-lighted areas.
6.Wear safety toed shoes when assigned to handling freight.
7.Do not place hands in or near the openings of cages that contain animals.
Vehicle Ground Rules on Airport Premises
1.Only employer authorized personnel may operate company vehicles.
2.Yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.
3.Do not operate a vehicle that is loaded with unsecured materials that could blow, slide, tip or fall from the vehicle.
4.Do not operate a vehicle in areas posted "Restricted Area".
5.Tow no more than four (4) baggage carts or pods at a time.
6.Do not exceed a speed limit of 15 miles per hour when towing pods or baggage carts.
7.Do not leave engine running when vehicle is parked and unattended.
8.Park fuel trucks at least fifty (50) feet from hangar, paint shop, dope shop or fuel storage system.
9.Do not taxi, tow or push any aircraft on any runway or taxiway without first receiving clearance from the air traffic control tower.
10.Do not taxi aircraft into or out of any hangar.
11.Do not operate vehicles/equipment between the aircraft and passenger gate when passengers are boarding or exiting the plane.
12.Obey all traffic patterns and signs at all times.
13.Do not operate the aircraft if its brakes do not work.
14.Do not block or obstruct accesses to safety and emergency equipment, exits, gates, or building entrances when parking any vehicle.
15.Start aircraft engines only in places designated for such purposes.
16.Do not begin to load or unload materials until aircraft has come to a complete stop and engines have shut down.
17.Do not enter docking area while aircraft are arriving or departing.
Machine Guarding
1.Replace the guards before starting machines, after making adjustments or repairs.
2.Do not remove, alter or bypass any safety guards or devices when operating any piece of equipment or machinery.
Motorized Ground Equipment
1.Do not park motorized equipment near any aircraft in such a way that it prevents other equipment from being moved in the case of an emergency.
2.Do not operate vehicle if its fire extinguisher is missing or has been discharged.
3.Do not exceed posted weight limits on hoists and mobile equipment.
4.Do not operate equipment if labeled identification on controls becomes unreadable.
5.Do not alter, bypass or remove the deadman function control.
6.Do not use equipment if self-closing fuel caps are missing or inoperable.
7.Do not use equipment if the defogger or the windshield wipers are inoperable.
8.Stow all cables, cords, hoses, and accessories before moving equipment.
9.Before moving equipment, close and secure all doors of the equipment.
10.Stop work immediately if you do not understand your signal person.
11.Do not alter or bypass controls for raising materials on high-lift vehicles.
12.Only Containerized Transport Vehicle operators may operate Containerized Transport Vehicles (CTV).
13.Do not operate manually moved units if the operational parking brakes fail to engage when using the unit.
14.Do not use motorized ground equipment if horn or backup alarm does not sound.
15.Do not operate the vehicle if it has leaks, faulty brakes, burned out headlights or taillights.
16.Do not ride on equipment unless it is equipped with a passenger seat.
17.Use installed hand ladders or foot steps for mounting or dismounting the Ground Service Equipment (GSE) units.
18.When maintenance is being performed under an elevated loader bed, use mechanical jacks or braces to prevent accidental collapse of the bed.
Electrical Safety
1.Do not use an electrical tool if its housing is cracked.
2.Do not use electrical tools while working from a metal ladder unless the ladder has rubber feet.
3.Turn the power switch of electrical tools to "off" before plugging or unplugging them.
4.Do not leave tools that are "on" unattended.
5.Do not handle or operate electrical tools when your hands are wet or when you are standing on wet floors.
6Do not stand in water or on wet surfaces when operating power hand tools or portable electrical appliances.
7.Do not carry equipment or tools by the cord.
8.Do not use extension cords or other grounded three-pronged power cords that have the ground prong removed or broken off.
9.Position aircraft so that exposed fabric-covered surfaces are more than one foot from any antenna system.
10.Use only explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting systems within hangers and maintenance shelters.
11.Do not remove protective guards or shields from portable lamps.
12.When working in bucket trucks, wear dielectric hard hats.
FUELING OPERATIONS
1.Do not fuel or defuel aircraft while engines are running or are being warmed by external heat.
2.Do not fuel or defuel any aircraft inside any building.
3.Do not fuel or defuel aircraft while passengers are on board unless a passenger boarding device is in place at the cabin door of aircraft.
4.Do not perform repairs to aircraft during de-fueling or refueling.
5.Do not switch any electrical appliances on or off during refueling or de-fueling.
6.Do not drive the fueler in reverse unless a "spotter" is guiding the backing operation.
7.Do not operate a fueling vehicle on a taxiway or runway.
8.Park fuel trucks at least ten (10) feet from each other.
9.Do not fuel or defuel any aircraft during a thunderstorm.
10.Do not carry lighters or matches on your person while performing fuel-servicing operations.
11.Do not operate a radio transmitter or receiver during refueling or defueling operations.
12.Clean up fuel spills immediately by using sand, absorbent booms, sweeps, pads, blankets, and pillows.
13.Do not perform fueling operations or start aircraft engines within 50 feet of a fuel spill or other volatile fluids that are on the ground.
GROUNDSKEEPERS
Gasoline Powered Lawn Maintenance Equipment
1.Do not operate powered equipment on which you have not been trained.
2.Do not use tools with parts that are loose, worn, cracked or otherwise visibly damaged.
3.Read and follow the manufacturer's routine and preventive maintenance schedule posted on the workshop wall.
4.Tag damaged tools "Out of Service" to prevent accidental start up or use.
5.Do not alter or by-pass any safety device provided by the manufacturer.
6.Use grip locations specified by the manufacturer as handholds when operating the unit.
7.Do not pour fuel into the tank of a running engine.
8.Do not smoke while servicing, using or refueling a gasoline powered tool.
9.Keep body parts and clothing away from the running engine and the cutting blade.
10.Do not run a gasoline engine inside the storage shed.
11.Turn off the engine when you are not cutting or trimming.
12.Allow the engine to cool before performing maintenance or refueling.
13.Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire before cleaning, inspecting, adjusting or repairing cutting blades or other rotating parts.
14.Allow the engine to cool before covering or storing it in the storage shed.
Mowing
1.Visually inspect the area to be mowed. Remove or mow around hazards such as tree stumps, roots, rocks, branches, sprinklers, hoses, electrical cords, light fixtures, and pipes.
2.Never by-pass the kill switch on the mower handle.
3.Only the operator is permitted to ride on a riding mower.
4.Put the mower into neutral before starting or shutting off a riding power mower.
5.Do not place hands or feet under the mower deck.
6.Do not direct the grass discharge towards bystanders.
7.Empty the grass catcher to avoid clogging the mower.
8.Turn off the mower before dumping the grass catcher or removing clogged grass from the chute.
9.When using a riding mower, mow up and down the slope. Do not mow across a slope.
10.To mow across a slope, use an upright mower.
11.Keep the mower in gear when going down slopes.
Edging
1.Do not start an edger with the blade touching the ground.
2.Do not allow anyone to stand in front of or on the unguarded side of the blade while the edger is in operation.
3.Operate the edger at full blade speed.
4.When edging along roads, stay as close to the curb as possible.
5.Wear hard hat and face shield when operating a powered edger.
Line Trim/Weed Eater
- Before refueling, remove the trimmer from your harness, place the trimmer on the ground and allow the engine to cool.
Backpack Blowers
1.Do not use the blower to clean yourself.
2.Do not direct the blower toward bystanders.
General Chain Saw Safety
1.When transporting a chain saw in a vehicle, keep the chain and the bar covered with a guard and secure the saw to prevent fuel spillage and damage.
2.When transporting a chain saw by hand, stop the engine, grip the saw handle, place the muffler at the side away from your body and position the guide bar to the rear.
3.Do not remove the chain brake or alter handles, chain brake, chain or covers.
4.Always start a chain saw with a 10 inch or larger bar on the ground. Engage the chain brake, place one foot through the bottom handle, hold the top handle and pull the starter rope.
5.Do not place a chain saw on your knee when starting it.
6.Always use both hands to maintain control of the chain saw.
7.When moving from tree to tree or cut to cut, activate the chain brake, remove your finger from the trigger and keep the bar away from your body.
8.Do not operate a chain saw above your shoulder height.
9.To prevent kickback, keep the nose of the bar clear of other nearby objects during cutting.
10.Do not set a saw down while the blade is engaged.
11.Stop the engine and turn the switch to "OFF" when the chain saw is to be left unattended.
