Group Chief Executive and President, AIA

Following his appointment in July 2010, Mark led the successful IPO that established AIA as an independent Asian-based Group. AIA’s listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on October 29, 2010 broke new local and world records: the second largest IPO in Hong Kong’s history, the fourth largest IPO in the world ever and the largest IPO ever in the insurance sector.

As Group Chief Executive and President of AIA Group Limited, Mark has responsibility for building on and expanding AIA’s unparalleled platformas the pre-eminent life insurance provider in the Asia Pacific region.

AIA is the fourth largest insurance company in the world by market capitalization.

Since becoming an independent group,AIA under Mark’s leadership has been delivering sustained quality growth with Value of New Business increasing at a compound rate of more than 20%over the last four years. With a capitalisation of US$65 bn, AIA is now the 6th largest company on the Hang Seng Index, and the largest listed company incorporated and headquartered in Hong Kong.

In addition to achieving high quality growth of its core agency distribution force, Mark has also leveraged his bancassurance experience to secure, in 2013, a landmark partnership with Citibank across 11 markets. With a commitment to helping customers across the region lead longer and healthier lives, Mark spearheaded the setting up of AIA Vitality across the region – an initiative aimed at helping and incentivizing customers to adopt healthier behaviours.

Before joining AIA, Mark was Group Chief Executive, Prudential plc.The UK’s largest quoted life insurance company. During his tenure, he led the company to achieve a total shareholder return that outperformed all key UK and European competitors, a track record based primarily on the development and expansion of its Asian operations.

Mark has lived in Asia for over 20 of his close to 30 years in the life insurance industry, initially as General Manager of Prudential Assurance Hong Kong and from 1994 to 2003 as founder Chief Executive of Prudential Corporation Asia. Mark directed the rapid growth of Prudential’s agency operations from a few hundred agents in three countries to over 450,000 agents across 12 markets. Mark was also responsible for developing a highly productive bancassurance operation and a well-regarded regional retail and institutional fund management business. Mark’s experience has given him a deep understanding of the diversity of insurance markets across Asia and has also enabled him to develop valuable relationships with regulators, national governments and key senior business figures across the region.He is one of only a very few recipients of the Government of Vietnam’s Friendship Medal awarded by the President of Vietnam in 2009 in recognition of his contribution to the development of Vietnam’s financial services sector.

Mark is an independent board member of Goldman Sachs Inc, a board he joined in November 2012. Mark also sits on the International Advisory Board for the Discovery Group and is a member of the Asia Business Council. Mark is an Associate Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a member of the International Advisory Board for the Lingnan College, Sun Yat-Sen University in China.

Mark was a Non-Executive Director of the Court of The Bank of England and a member of both its Financial Stability Committee and its Audit and Risk Committee from 1 June 2009 to 31 May 2012.

Mark read Business Studies at Leeds University and is a Chartered Accountant and tax specialist by training.

Mark is married to Janet, they have a son and a daughter. Mark is an avid soccer fan, having played professional football in both the UK and South Africa for a number of years. Mark is also a passionate collector of modern and contemporary art and was a Non-Executive Director of the world-renowned Edinburgh International Festival from 2005 to 2011.
