A Cosmetology license will give you an opportunity to work in areas such as being a; stylist, esthetician, manicurist, salon owner, educator, sales representative, makeup artist, and many more. To do this, you will be asked to apply many new concepts. Special emphasis will be placed on (1) professionalism in the salon, (2) State Board rules and regulations, (3) Skills pertaining to; cutting, manicuring, styling, coloring, permanent waving, relaxing, anatomy, etc. Much time will be spent on reading and writing assignments in order to better apply concepts in the lab. At times you may be over-whelmed at the amount of information there is to learn. Be assured, it is all crucial in order to complete our goal in order to be prepared to take your State Board test your senior year.

The Science of Cosmetology integrates the Life Sciences and Physical Sciences in an approach to learning that allows students to explore, experiment with, and apply scientific principles to real-life applications and situations. This course will provide students with an understanding of the biological principles that influences the daily work of cosmetologists, particularly with regard to human health, anatomy, and physiology. This course will also provide the necessary background knowledge in chemistry and problem solving for students to successfully use the technical equipment and products required in cosmetology careers. Students learn contextually with demonstrations, salon applications, and authentic learning opportunities.

Instructional Philosophy

I am a firm believer of good study habits. A large percentage of students that are successful in school are successful because of good study habits and organizational skills. This course will be challenging at times, but I will expect you to do your best and encourage you at all times. Coming to class on time, having homework done, and having materials needed, will allow you to be prepared for this class and the exciting world of cosmetology.

As your teacher, I will try to put you in a positive direction. However, remember, learning is not in the hands of your teacher, but yours. As a student, learning is your job and knowledge is your paycheck. In addition, classroom attitude is instrumental to future success in this profession. You will be challenged to put aside matters unrelated to this classroom. It is very important to learn this early on, because it will be expected of you in the cosmetology profession because it is a service industry. Learning is a lot of work, but it should be fun too. I hope you enjoy some of the activities we will be doing in class.
