Formatting Rules

Start each new major section should start on a new page. These page breaks have been included in this document for you.

Number all your headings in both your table of contents and the main body of your projectreport. This numbering has been included in this document for you. You will need to maintain this numbering as you modify the document.

Table of contents

The table of contents is set up for you. This is a Word function and relies on you using the correct Word heading styles. If you want to add a heading you should copy a similar heading in the body of your document.

For example, if you want to add a new heading 4.3, copy (and paste) the heading 4.2.

To update the table of contents, click on the word “Contents” on the table of contents page. You will see a function that enables you to update the whole table of contents.

Executive Summary

This should be your entire report summarised in no more than two pages. Remember to:

  • Discuss briefly your organisation and its industry
  • Outline your problem/issue/opportunity
  • Discuss some key findings from your literature review
  • Outline your key findings
  • Discuss the main points from your analysis
  • Key recommendations

An executive summary is not just an overview of topics or issues covered in a document, it is the key findings contained within a document summarised for a reader so that they can identify what areas of the document they might wish to read in more depth.

You can “cut and paste” this section from your proposal. Remember to make any changes as directed by your academic supervisor contained in the final marked version of your proposal.

Discuss here the industry that the organisation you are doing your internship in is a part of.

For example, if your organisation is a café, discuss the hospitality industry in Christchurch. Issues to consider are: Is it a competitive industry? Is it an industry that is growing or shrinking?

Issues to consider are: What type of structure is the organisation? (sole trader, company, franchise etc.). Where is the organisation physically located? How many staff does the organisation employ and how is work organised within the organisation?

Focus your discussion on the area of the organisation you are doing your research in.

Discuss here the problem you will be seeking to solve or the process, procedure, policy you will be seeking to improve through your research.

Discuss here why your organisation has decided to investigate this issue now.

What reasons have made this issue one that your organisation wants to research this semester?

A key event may have triggered the organisation’s desire to research this issue now such as a serious customer complaint or declining profits.

3.0Literature Review

In this section you should discuss key theory related to your project. This literature review will demonstrate that you understand the theory underpinning your project and help you interpret your results (in Section 3).

You can “cut and paste” your “Brief Literature Review” from your proposal here. Remember to make any changes as directed by your academic supervisor contained in the final marked version of your proposal. Remember that this section will need to be expanded in order to fully discuss the literature pertaining to your research.

Your literature review must acknowledge its sources using APA in-text citations.

This should contain in alphabetical order by author all the published sources (excludes personal communication) you have cited as in text citations throughout the main body of your Research Project Report.

Remember to include published sources you have cited throughout the main body of your report as full APA style citations.
