6. Background tothe Workshop
In order to asses the progress achieved in ecosystem assessment and management (EAM) and to foster future collaboration, the 2nd International EAM Workshop will be held atLanzhouUniversity from July 20-25, 2010. This workshop will be sponsored jointly by the “111” Program, LanzhouUniversity, The University of Western Australia and the People’s Government of Minqin County. The workshop has two components, one of which will be held in Lanzhou with the major aim of stimulating academic exchange, and the second part will be held in Minqin Countywith the aim of integrating a field visit to a water-scarce agricultural regionand roundtable discussions with local government officials and technicians,
In December 2006, under the sponsorship of “111” Program, funded by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and the Ministry of Education of China, MOE Key Laboratory of Arid and Grassland Ecology of Lanzhou University, with overseas universities and research institutions such as the University of Ottawa, McGill University, Eastern Cereal and Oilseed Research Center of Canada’s Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Environmental Protection and some domestic universities, Lanzhou University hosted the 1stInternational Workshop on Ecosystem Assessment and Management. The 3-day workshop drew more than 20 domestic and international experts on EAM to participate in academic exchange and a field tour. The workshop successfully carried out in-depth discussions, focusing on agricultural productivity in arid and semi-arid northwest China, vegetation, water and soil loss, water scarcity and poverty.
After discussion and consultation, LanzhouUniversity, the University of Western Australia and the government of MinqinCounty have decided to hold the 2ndInternational Workshop on EAM from 19 to 25July 2010. The workshop will focus on agricultural development in China’s western arid and semi-arid areas and the status quo of the ecological environment and social development of the region. A summary of the achievements over the past four years and the outlook for future development of EAM will be included. The workshop has two symposia, one atLanzhouUniversity and the other in WuweiCity, Minqin County, Gansu Province.
7. The Workshop Program
Renowned experts from China and abroad will be invited to the workshop to report oncurrent developments on global climate change and ecosystem management, addressing the topic: “improvements tothe productivity and sustainable development of fragile arid and semi-arid agro-ecosystems under the conditions of global climate change”.
1).Assessment of important progress in international EAM cooperative projects.
2). Assessment and management of semi-arid rainfed agro-ecosystems
a) The key issues of agro-ecosystems in arid and semi-arid areas of Northwest China;
b) Development and adaptation of rainfed agricultural systems in semi-arid areas;
c) Temporal and spatial vulnerability of agricultural ecosystems:Environmental conservation and sustainability.
3). Assessment and management of oasis agro-ecological systems in arid areas
d) Restoration measures of ecosystem function in degraded lands;
e) Livestock management in degraded ecosystems;
f) Human impacts on the restoration of degraded ecosystems;
g) Management of water resources and sustainable development of oases inarid areas

10. Instructions to Authors
Please assist the workshoporganisers by following the guidelines. It is assumed you will be using a recent version of Microsoft Word. It is important that all authorsnote the following:
1) Contributed papers must not exceed 6000 words in length (including figures, etc.).
a)Make the title brief and specific to the subject of your paper.
b) Abstracts for all papers must not exceed 300 words. The abstract should contain an accurate summary of the context and new information presented in the paper or poster paper.
2) Text requirements
a) Use Times New Roman for all text including headings. Left align all text, images and tables.
b) Use the Normal style for all text (style-normal) where possible in preference to "Body text" styles. Normal text should be 11 point with single line spacing.
c) Do not indent the first line of a paragraph. Leave one blank line between paragraphs and before new section headings.
d) Authors’ email may be hyperlinked. Hyperlinks to external web references should be placed in the References section, rather than in the body of the paper.
e) Use List Bullet or List Number styles where appropriate for dot point or numbered lists.
3) Headings and sections
a) Paper title: (style-Title) - 14 point, bold, sentence case (capitals for proper nouns only). If the title extends to a second line, do not use “enter” to break the line. Leave one blank line below the title.
b) Authors' names: (style-author) - 11 point. First name should come before the family name for each author. Highlight the presenting author in bold. Use letters (superscripts) to indicate different addresses. Use shift enter to break lines between addresses. Leave one blank line below the authors’ names.
c) Authors' address: (style-address) - 9 point, not italics. The corresponding email may be included at the end of each address. Leave two blank lines after the authors’ addresses.
d) Section Headings: Heading 1 (style-Heading 1) - 11 point, bold, not italic and Heading 2 (style-Heading 2) - 11 point, italic. Note: use sentence case NOT capital letters for headings.
4) Page layout
a) Margins should be set at 2 cm all round.
b) Do not indent paragraphs.

Selected papers will besubjected to peer-review and published in a special issueofActa Ecologia Sinica in 2010(in either the English version or Chinese version) (there are two versions of this journal, one in English and one in Chinese) or other relevant international journalsafter the workshop.

14. Field Excursions
There are two field excursions during the workshop. One is a tour of typical semi-arid agricultural/ecological landscapes and protective agricultural ecosystems at Beishan Experimental Station about 2 hours by bus from Lanzhou. It will provide an opportunity to learn about the current status of rainwater-harvesting practices andto experience the dry and eroded Loess Plateau. The tour has been arrangedforJuly 22nd, with expensescovered by the conference. After that, the conference will be transferred to Minqin Countyof Wuweion July 23rd, which includes a bus tour from Lanzhou to Minqin in the morning and another separate tour around Minqin in the afternoon. Near Wuwei participants can see a typical oasis landscape and irrigated agricultureon the bus tour. It will provide an opportunity to learn about restoration and water-saving measures in a seriously-droughted and degraded oasis ecosystem surrounded by two large deserts in arid northwest China.
15. Transport, FoodandAccommodation
Transportand accommodationis not covered by the registration fee and must be paid by delegates.
The choice ofworkshop accommodation includesthe Experts HouseofLanzhouUniversity,the Cui Ying Hotel ofLanzhouUniversityandOriental Hotel of Lanzhou.Concessional prices for the workshop will bebetween 100-300 RMB per day.The conference will provide all the lunches and two welcome banquets (in Lanzhou and Minqin respectively). The transport from the airport to downtown is paid by the delegates (30 RMB by shuttle bus and around 150-200 RMB by taxi), and the transport between Lanzhou and Minqin will be paid by the conference. The excursion expenses are included in the registration fee.
