Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
TABLE MANNERS
Lest we think that today’s Gospel passage is a primer on how to host a dinner party, we need to remember that the image of the banquet—particularly in Luke’s Gospel—is a primary way Jesus illustrates the reign of God. Meals of all sorts, from the most commonplace to the most festive banquet, were a social phenomenon that his listeners understood. Being at table was an important means of communication for them. This is why Jesus got in so much trouble for dining with sinners: his critics wouldn’t dine with them, believing they would never dine at the banquet set by God Almighty. Today we still are uncomfortable being at a meal table with those we do not like or of whom we do not approve. So Jesus used table images to upend many of the expectations about order and place cards that were common in his day. Such is the upended table he describes today, where the puffed-up guest gets deflated, where the guest who is seated quietly at the foot of the table is brought to the place of honor by none other than the host himself.
EARTHLY TABLES, HEAVENLY TABLES
To get ready for the upending we’ll experience at the heavenly banquet, Jesus tells us to use the tables of our daily living. We ought not invite those we know or are related to; they may repay us and therefore we will not actually have extended any hospitality at all. Rather, look to those who cannot repay the hospitality. Issue the invitation to anyone who does not have the means to return one; bring all who are not able to get to the table by themselves. Be their nourishment, be their strength. Then you will join the feasting of the resurrection of the righteous. And what a gathering the Letter to the Hebrews describes! Infinite angels partaking in the festivities of the heavenly Jerusalem, all who have become the firstborn to heaven in Christ their firstfruit assembled there, all the rejoicing spirits of the just ones, now made perfect, joined with Jesus. Then our joy will not be in the feasting or our particular place at the table, but in our oneness in the covenant of eternal life won for us by the blood of Christ.

However, sometimes, because the people would have to sit down for the announcements, and stand again for the final blessing, the presiders invite the people to remain seated. The proper position for this prayer is standing. Pastoral considerations sometimes allow us to do otherwise.

September 29, Feast Day of St. Michael
“Gran Kermes” - A Latino Fund Raiser
To help with the capital improvements on the church, our Latino parishioners are sponsoring a “kermes” or fundraiser on the weekend of the feast day of our patron saint, St. Michael, the Archangel. There will be authentic Latino food available in the school beginning at 4:00 pm and going to well after the evening mass. There will be games for the kids, a Latino DJ, and items to be raffled off. This will take place on Saturday, September 28. At the weekend masses we will celebrate the feast day of St. Michael.

I will be out of town at a workshop until late Saturday afternoon on September 14. Fr. Don Buchannon who was going to celebrate the 5:30 pm mass has begun receiving treatment for throat cancer. I’ve been unable to find a priest to cover the regularly scheduled mass at 5:30. I will be able to get back in time to celebrate the mass at 7:00 pm.

On Saturday, September 21, we need volunteers to help clean up the grounds at St. Michael. We will be taking down some trees, pruning back bushes, etc. Mark your calendars and sign up when the clip board is passed around. (This will probably also be the follow up day for the painting of the back of the school by our Confirmation Candidates).
Skilled Volunteers Needed In September
The rebuilding process continues to go well in Henryville. The number of families needing help to get back in their homes has shrunk from several hundred down to several dozen. March 2 Recovery hopes to complete its work by November or December. However, the rebuilding effort that has begun in Moore Oklahoma has diverted many of the workers who have been helping out here at home. Skilled volunteers are needed especially in the month of September. If you are a skilled construction worker - framers, plumbers, electricians, dry wall workers etc - and would like to volunteer, please call March 2 Recovery at 502-599-8557.

The following are suggested habits for the Year of Faith: 1) Ask for God’s blessing each morning; 2) Receive the Holy Eucharist for strength and nourishment; 3) Call upon the saints; 4) Reach out to help a neighbor in need; 5) Offer a prayer at mealtime; 6) Savor a few minutes of silence; and 7) Give thanks to God each night.

Faith Formation News: Preschool thru High School classes at 9:30. Assistants are needed each Sunday. Thanks to last Sunday’s assistants: Dianne Wimsett, Aimee Doherty, Nathan Fouts and Jose Martinez.
Remember Faith is a gift from God. Faith Formation is a life-long growth process. We encourage parents to attend Mass with their children this enables the children to integrate what they learn in their Faith Formation classes with weekly participation in the liturgy. Our service project each week is to collect non-perishable canned goods for the North Clark Outreach Center.
Our progam is off and running. There is still time to sign up. We welcome our new families to the program. If your child is absent on Sunday morning, please give the office a call at 256-3503. If your children have been absent, please contact the catechist to keep up with their current assignment.

This year, Catechetical Sunday at St. Michael will be celebrated on September 21-22 weekend at all the Masses. The theme this year is “Open the Door of Faith”. This is taken from the Vatican’s guiding document on the year of Faith. Those who have been designated by the community to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry.
