CONTOUR MAP AND MODEL
The performance task for the Geography Skills unit is a contour mapping and model-building exercise. This assignment is an individual project. The goal of this performance task is to create a contour map, a topographic map and a landform model that represents the characteristics of a given land area. The skills developed in the classroom are essential to the completion of this task.
The contour map performance task allows the students the opportunity to demonstrate the mastery of a number of important expectations. By the successful completion of this assignment the student will:
- select and use appropriate methods for displaying geographic data;
- create and use effectively photographs, charts, graphs, models and diagrams;
- use cartographic conventions correctly when constructing maps;
- demonstrate an understanding of the methods used to collect, organize, manipulate and interpret geographic data;
- use graphic organizers effectively to visualize, clarify, and interpret geographic information;
- select and use appropriate technology to present geographic information;
- use different types of maps to interpret geographic relationships.

In this part of the performance task you will create your own topographic map. Follow the instructions below and create your map on the grid provided. Be sure to use proper symbols and colours and to follow all the rules for mapping. Be sure to include a legend for the topographic map.
There are four (4) towns on this island. Each town fills the grid(s) it is located in. One is located on the large bay on the north side of the island. This town covers the grids 213 582 and 223 582. A second town is found in the grid around 245 535. The third town is located in the mountain region and occupies the north half of the grid 325 615. The other half of the grid is part of a large lake. The smallest town or village occupies the partial grid 355 535 on the east side of the small cove in the southeast corner of the island. It also includes the partial grid to the east side of the bay. Name each of the towns. The three largest towns each have a church at 211 582, 246 538 and 329 619. There is a school at 215 581 and a hospital at 221 582
There are three (3) major roads on this island. A highway (#1) joins the first town to the second town. It is a fairly straight road running in a valley from 229 580 to 244 540. A second highway starts at 232 570 (Highway #1) and going east follows the coast around the island until it reaches the small village in the southeast. The road stays close to the coast and goes through the following points: 260 600, 270 640, 310 660, 350 662, 360 620 and 367 570. The road enters the village at 350 540. Give the road a name. A third road runs due west from 320 616 to intersect the second road at 268 616. This is Highway #3. Be sure to include bridges where the roads cross a river.
There is one lake on the island and three rivers. The lake is fairly large, almost round and fills the grid around 325 605 and half the adjacent grid to the north. The elevation of the lake is at 420m. The other half of this grid is the third town!!! Name the lake. The first river starts near the top of a hill at 163 545 and flows northward in a smooth arc to 170 570 where it turns and flows southeast to 200 560. From there it flows northeast and enters the large bay at 232 580 – just east of the town. Give this river a name. The second river flows east from the lake at 333 608 and leaves the island at 363 607. Name this river as well. The third river starts at about 820 m at 315 585 and flows southeast and leaves the island at the head of the small bay in the southeast corner of the island. This river and the small bay have the same name.
Orchards cover the three grids centred on 175 575, 185 575 and 195 575 while vineyards cover grids 175 555, 185 555 and 195 555. The owner of these orchards and vineyards has a large house at 193 563 and three large barns nearby. A dirt road runs from the house along the north side of the river until it reaches Highway #1.
A large forest covers the top and northern slopes of the largest hill – about six grids – it reaches the southern edge of the lake.
There is a pond at 175 590 surrounded by a campground. There are also two picnic areas nearby. There is a lighthouse at 185 650 and a shipwreck at 194 632. There is a large golf course in the grid just west of the first town.
There are three farms along the highway that runs along the coast. The first is at 257 597. There is a house and a barn here. The second is at 308 658 – it has a house, barn and silo. The third is at 359 574 – it has a house, barn and a small quarry. There is a tower (821 metres) at 314 585. A scattered settlement can be found at 268 616.

CONTOUR MAP
In this part of the performance task you will draw a contour map. A base map of spot heights is provided. Use a contour interval of 100m when you draw the contours. Be sure to follow all the rules for drawing contours. NOTE: You will have to adjust your contours to take into account the three rivers on the island. You should draw the rivers on the contour map before you begin.
THIS PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT MUST BE COMPLETED AND APPROVED BY THE TEACHER BEFORE PROCEEDING TO PARTS 3 AND 4.

CROSS-SECTION
Once the contour map has been checked, draw a cross-section or profile of the island. Draw a line or transect from 345 670 to 290 520 and use that line to draw your cross-section. You must use a scale of 1cm = 100m for the cross-section. Be sure to include a title and to label the cross-section properly.

MODEL BUILDING Application /10 marks
You will now construct a three dimensional (3-D) model of the same area used for your topographic map and contour map. Examples of the landform models will be available in the classroom – but you will have to decide what material you will use for this project. Your teacher will demonstrate a variety of ways to build the landform model – one simple way is outlined below.
- Take a light green sheet of construction paper and put it under the contour map. Trace the outline of the island with a pencil so the outline appears on the construction paper. Cut out the outline and use it as a base for your model.
- Take another sheet of construction paper (a darker green) and trace out the 100 m contour in the same manner as step one. Cut it out and use it to trace the 100 m contour onto your cardboard or foam board. Cut that out as well – glue the construction paper onto the cardboard or foam board. Position this 100 m piece onto the island outline from part one.
- Continue this process until all of the contour lines have been traced, cut and glued. Remember to use different colours for different elevations. Don’t lose any pieces!
- Glue the first layer on the cardboard base. Glue the rest of the layers onto your model in the approximate locations as shown on the contour map. Your model should clearly show the different heights of the island.
- Locate all the features from your topographic map of the island onto the model. Devise an appropriate way of showing these and place them in their correct location on your completed model. Ensure your model has a legend and title.
