Course Description

This course presents the essentials of grammar and reading with practice in speaking and writing of basic Spanish, as well as the development of conversational skills. Students will take a placement test the first day of class; high scores will place students in Spa 102.

Course Objectives

· To obtain a knowledge and appreciation of Spanish language and culture of Spanish-speaking people

· To introduce and develop communication skills in Spanish, including listening, speaking, reading and writing skills

· To learn grammatical structures and use them correctly in basic constructions

Students completing Spanish 101 should be able to:

· Make up their own oral statements or questions

· Read and write basic Spanish, gain some insights into the cultural background of the Hispanic world

Online Homework: Students will complete work assigned from the workbook online Imágenes, 2nd Edition eStudent Activities Manual QUIA, (eSAM) The first day of class students are asked to register for the workbook online. To register students need to enter a BOOK CODE (Bookstore or ONLINE) and the COURSE CODE: GBFXC964. http://www.spanish4ever.com/GWCCSUMMER2010QUIA.html

Readings: Students will read the sections assigned from Imágenes. The participation from these readings will be considered toward the Class Participation Grade.

Class Participation: This grade is based on an evaluation of each student’s daily participation. Students are required to participate 2 times everyday to get a passing grade. Please follow the Active Participation Rubric attached at the end of the syllabus.

Although you may miss up to one (1) class (for medical, religious, or work reasons etc.,) without your participation grade being affected, on a second (2th) class been missed the Class Participation grade will be reduced by 50%. On a third (3th) absence the Class Participation grade will be reduced by 75%. On your fourth (4th) absence the Class Participation grade will be 0. Punctuality is essential.

Evaluations:

Tests: There will be a test at the end of every chapter. Final Exam: Final exam will be accumulative; it consists of written, listening and oral examination.

There will be no make-ups for Evaluations (Tests or Final Exam)

Enter the book key in the Enter book key field at the top of the Student Workstation window and click Go.

Click Confirm to confirm your registration information.

The system displays the Student Workstation and lists the book under the My books heading.

Beside the book listing, enter the course code, GBFXC964, in the Enter course code field and click Go.

If necessary, select a class (section) and click Submit
