Work instruction
Equipment may be prescribed only by an approved prescriber or by a clinician who has the support of an approved prescriber. Certain equipment can only be prescribed by a health professional of a specific discipline. Refer to procedure “Achieving Approved Prescriber Status”
Refer to the “Equipment in-scope list”for which discipline can prescribe each type of equipment. Look at the list and locate the item of equipment that you wish to prescribe. Once the item is located, look across the columns at which discipline(s) can prescribe that item. Refer to the key below:

PT / PhysiotherapistOT / Occupational Therapist
Pod / Podiatrist
SP / Speech Pathologist
RN / Registered Nurse
CN / Continence Nurse Advisor
OT General / AnOccupational Therapist who has completed a general orientation to Basic Activities for Daily Living (ADL) equipment, done as part of initial staff orientation.
OT Mobility / AnOccupational Therapist who has completed an in-service from a Physiotherapist on prescribing mobility aids such as walking frames and walking sticks. If complex gait issues are present, only PT should prescribe mobility aids.
PT General / A Physiotherapist who has completed a general orientation to mobility equipment, done as part of initial orientation.
PT Personal Care / A Physiotherapist who has completed an in-service training session from an OT in the prescription of personal care aids eg shower chairs and toileting equipment.
Item specific / Items which require the achieving of approved prescriber status for the specific item.Referto procedure “Achieving Approved Prescriber Status”
