CAPT REVIEW VOCABULARY LIST:

Validity - being logically correct, well grounded and justifiable.

Independent Variable - The variable that is directly changed by the person designing the experiment.

Dependent Variable - The variable that is measured at the end of the experiment. Usually measured in metric units.

Control Variables - Those variables that are kept in the same in all experimental groups.

Control Group - A group in an experiment run without the independent variable in order to compare its effect.

Brownfield Sites - abandoned or underused industrial and commercial facilities because of possible environmental contamination.

Developed Country - country with relatively high level of industrialization and standard of living. Usually characterized by low birth and death rates, good access to medical care and education.

Undeveloped Country - country with low level of industrialization and standard of living. Usually characterized by high birth and death rates, poor access to medical care and education.

Genetically Modified Foods - DNA from one organism is transplanted in to another organism for a certain purpose. For instance the gene for a certain pesticide may be inserted into a plant giving that plant the ability to fight off insects.

Renewable Resources - An energy source capable of being renewed quickly by natural ecological cycles and sound management practices. Examples include wind, solar, and biomass.

Non-renewable resources - Energy sources are considered nonrenewable if they cannot be replenished (made again) in a short period of time. These include oil, coal, natural gas and nuclear energy sources.

Biological Diversity - Variations of living things at all levels. Genetic diversity means that organisms within the same species have differences in their DNA that makes them unique. If organisms are more diverse it helps them to adapt and survive better in the future.
