Find Fulfillment – At Shooster Preserve Volunteer Workday

WHAT: North District Natural Areas continues its free Public Workdays, for ages 18 and up, with one to take place at the Herman and Dorothy Shooster Preserve in Margate. The workday runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 14.

Participants will help the environment by clearing the southeast corner of the natural area of garbage and invasive plants and preparing for planting. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and drinking water. They should also dress appropriately with long pants and long sleeves. Boots with rubber overshoes are recommended; athletic shoes are not recommended. Preregistration is required, and all participants must fill out a workday form before participating.

The Shooster Preserve, which is located in Margate on the south side of Southwest Seventh Court between U.S. 441/State Road 7 and Southwest 64th Terrace, has long been nicknamed “the Forest,” and it’s easy to see why. It is primarily a basin swamp, characterized by bald cypress, red maple, and pond apple in its deeper area, with a few areas of willow. Also included is a disturbed area of mesic flatwoods with slash pines and laurel oak, situated along the northern border of the site. The interior of the site contains a mature cypress dome with large pond apples, a type of habitat becoming increasingly rare in Broward County.

The site was dedicated on May 7, 2010, although it is currently not open to the public. Proposed management activities for the preserve focus on ecological restoration through exotic plant removal, hydrological restoration, planting of native species, and protection of the site through fencing and monitoring. Possible future amenities include a 1,850-foot nature trail with a 635-foot elevated walkway, interpretive signage, picnic tables, and a small playground.
