A brief history

The history of Krishnath College is a part of the history of Western education in Bengal and in a wider sense forms a chapter in the history of social and cultural progress of Bengal since the second half of the 19th century. The college, established in 1853 and named after Raja Krishnath of Cossimbazar in 1902, has from inception held up the vision of a liberal, secular institution where students are provided the best available education in the languages, humanities and modern sciences. Illustrious names in history like Maharani Swarnamoyee of Cossimbazar, Her Highness Amirunnessa Begum and Najibunnessa Begum of the Nawab family, Pratap Ch. Singh of Kandi, Pulin Behari Sen, Dr Ramdas Sen, Raja Mahesnarayan Roy, Pandit Madan Mohan Tarkalankar, the great linguist F J V Seddon have been associated with the institution in addition to numerous alumni of important citizens and nation builders.

Aims and objectives

In his Will, Raja Krishnath articulated his desire to “house the institution in an excellent, extensive and beautiful manner. The course of studies would include Humanities, Science, Law and Medicine, an extensive and handsome college or House of learning for instructing the youth of this country or of other countries.....shall be taught all the English, Bengali, Persian and Sanskrit and English science of medicine and law”. In compliance with this vision, the college is committed to dissemination of secular and advanced education as a mode of community development, and contributing to physical and intellectual development through extra-curricular engagements.

Admission Procedure

Availability of online application forms for admission and submission of the same will be notified immediately after the publication of HS (WBCHSE) results.

Admission to BA & BSc Honours Courses (Day shift): Candidates must submit separate application forms online for each Honours subject. Admissions would be made, serially and in compliance with all reservation rules, in strict adherence to a published merit list through ONLINE PROCESS.VISIT OUR WEBSITE .www.krishnathcollege.com

Admission to BA & BSc General Courses(Morning Shift): Candidates must submit separate application forms online for separate streams viz. Arts, Physical Science, Biological Science. Admission process shall be online process. The required percentage of aggregate and relevant subject marks for eligibility in General Courses shall be made available in website.

The exact date and time schedule of the admission process will be duly notified.

N.B. All guardians of students admitted must submit a signed declaration regarding ragging as per Supreme Court order in a provided format.

Rules regarding attendance:

A candidate shall be considered collegiate on attending 75% or more of the lectures delivered/practical classes held on each subject, and non-collegiate for attendance between 60% and 75%. Non-collegiate candidates may be permitted to sit for examinations on payment of requisite fees. Candidates with attendance below 60% shall be debarred from attending all examinations.

Evaluation system:

Continuous academic evaluation in the form of written internal assessments (in Honours subjects), tutorials and verbal tests, group activity, project work and assessment are conducted to augment the term-end university examinations. Evaluation is also envisaged as multifaceted with all stakeholders of the college evaluating each other through term-end feedback mechanisms, and collating them for mutual development.

Facilities on Campus:

Hostel

The college runs three accommodation facilities at

1)  Maharani Swarnamoyee Hostel for girls (75 seats)

2)  New Kumar Hostel for boys (105 seats)

3)  Maharaja Manindra Chandra Hostel for boys (110 seats)

4)  Wheeler Hostel for Girls (100 seats)

Allotment of hostel seats is done on dual consideration of educational merit and distance from permanent residential address. Applications in prescribed forms are to be made to respective superintendents on their invitation. Guardians must pledge to withdraw their wards in the eventuality of the superintendent’s order to that intent. Food arrangements will have to be solely managed by hostelite students

Library

The college library possesses a collection of more than 47,000 books, and provides reading, borrowing and photocopying facilities to students and staff. A book bank exists to issue text books on long-term basis to students economically disadvantaged, along with departmental seminar libraries for ready reference. Computerization of library data is under progress.

National Cadet Corps

The NCC unit, affiliated to 9th Bengal Battalion NCC, is a vibrant hub of activity, sending up cadets regularly to national and state level camps.

National Service Scheme

The student volunteers of the NSS unit are engaged in various community development programmes and other camps organized by the parent body.

Gymnasium

A well-equipped multi-gymnasium for students and staff has been constructed with the assistance of HRD Ministry, Govt. of India, and the UGC.

Students’ refreshment

A canteen maintaining hygiene standards caters to simple food requirements at affordable prices. A general common hall for students’ recreation is equipped with indoor game facilities, newspapers, television, and a permanent built-in stage for cultural performances. A separate girls’ common room stands adjacent to the general staff room, also equipped with necessaries.

Distance Education

The college houses study centres of the Netaji Subhas Open University and Rabindra Bharati University, offering distance education courses in UG, PG, Diploma and Certificate levels. Counseling programms are conducted in the college centre on weekends.

Computer centre

A computer centre run by the Techno India group functions under direct supervision of the college authority – it is the only DOE approved centre in the district holding O, A and B level examinations. Students of Krishnath College are entitled to a concession in course fees.

Alumni Association

‘Praktani’- the alumni association is integrated to the regular life on campus, participating intimately in awareness drives, student-jobmarket interfaces, and extending help to poor and meritorious students. Every ex-student may become a member of this huge fraternity.

Student-teacher co-ordination

A grievance redressal cell, with a separate wing for women, formed by the teachers’ council and approved by the Governing Body, exists to answer specific grievances of all stakeholders and make suitable recommendations to the GB if necessary.

Anti Ragging Cell

A committee to investigate, punish and prevent incidents of ragging on campus is functional, comprising of hostel superintendents, teachers, the Principal, non-teaching representatives, secretary to the teachers’ council and a students’ representative. Declarations and proclamations condemning ragging of any sort are sufficiently publicised.

Guardians’ Forum

Guardians of enrolled Honours course students may meet the Heads of concerned Departments each month to discuss the conduct and progress of their ward.

Career counseling cell

Armed with periodicals bearing news of the job market, the cell works to effect interfaces resulting in recruitments, like a recent haul by TCS from the campus.
