MIT PROGRAM
6:00-6:30: doodle and dinner
Intro
Lauren: Hey everyone! First, thank you all so much for coming – the MIT class has worked so hard to put together this six fold program. Welcome to the 60’s – tonight is about experiencing the magic of the 60’s in all shapes & forms. Through Beatles inspired folds, psychedelic tie-dye, a spiritual Havdallah and meditation, and other 60s style activities, we hope yall have an amazing time!
Ilana: Throughout the night, we will quote the Beatles, an influential and hugely popular music group from the 60s that still affects pop culture today. With this said we invite you to time-Travel with us back to the 60s, starting with our Havdalah service.
6:30-6:50: intro, Havdallah, meditation
Havdallah and meditation script
person 1,2,3:
here comes the sun,
here comes the sun, and I say
its all right
person 1: Havdallah in Hebrew means separation. With this service we are separating ordinary weekdays from the holy Sabbath day. The havdallah ceremony gives us one last chance to soak in Shabbat before we go back to our everyday lives.
(everyone sing along) song:
Yei-li-li-li-li-li….
person 2: Baruch atah adonai eloheinu melach haolam borai pere hagufin.
person 3: Baruch atah adonai eloheinu melach haolam boari mene bessamin
person 1: Barach atah adoanai eloheinu melach haolam borai mine haesh.
person 2: Baruch atah adonai eloheinu melach haolam hamavdeal bein kodesh lechol bein or lechoech bet yisrael lesheset yemai hamaeseh baruch atah adonai hamavdel bein hodesh lechol.
Meditation:
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
person 3: in the 60’s, meditation services were used as a way to get in touch with your inner self.
person 1: Its the feeling of something that is more than we know, a spirit that in each of us, and it comes from above, all around and below
person 2: so take as much time as you need, as you look, as you feel, as you think, as you care, and just sit and relax while you meditate peacefully
person 3: now, go off and find a spot to meditate. Think about this past week, about anything that has happened in the past, anything that is on your mind, or even anything you wish to happen in the future.
- bring many candles, all shapes and sizes, all colors...
- havdallah candle, kiddush cups, and spices jar
6:50-7:00: community service: trees for life
Trees for Life
Person 1: Trees for life is a program that plants trees in countries that have starving people.
Person 3: The trees that will be planted are fruit trees. When the trees bloom and the fruit grows people can eat for free.
Person 4: This way even the people who have no money can eat nutritious foods that will help them to survive.
Person 1: Each tree costs one dollar so we can plant as many trees as we would like.
Person 2: In the ‘60s the hippies were very environmentally active. This is why we will be planting trees for our community service portion of this program.
Person 3: The hippies in the ’60s were extremely serious about cleansing the world and making everything peaceful.
Person 4: Often times the hippies would have rallies in the parks or meditation sessions under the trees.
Person 1: The trees that are going to be planted can be used for shade, food, and a place for resting and pondering.
7:00-7:20: recreation: red rover and blob
RECREATION
Recreation: - put stickers on two teams,
Play Red rover!
Person 1, 2:
“You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world….
You better free your mind instead”
***play RED ROVER***
Person 1: During the 1960’s, fierce segregation triggered the Civil Rights Movement. This granted African-Americans equal rights across the nation, especially in the South. Even today, there are racial boundaries everywhere. At the end of the movement, African Americans had more equality and respect than they’d had in the past, but still not what they deserved.
Person 2: As we played Red Rover, we broke through the barriers that split groups of people up. Even within our chapter, there are barriers between friends, grades, and schools. Tonight is about breaking through all these obstacles, learning from each other, and appreciating the differences that we all have.
Person 1: We are continuing the revolution of equality in all shapes and forms. We can change the world, one open mind at a time.
Blob HIV/AIDS –
Person 3 and 4: I want you,
I want you so bad
It’s driving me mad, She’s so heavy.
Person 3: This quote is shows how AIDs is a huge burden to the world, infecting 2.7 million people in 2007, & currently the cause of 11.6 million child orphans in Africa.
- 33 million people are living with HIV/ AIDS as of 2007.
- AIDS was the cause of death of 2 million people in 2007.
- In developing and transitional countries, 9.7 million people are in immediate need of life-saving AIDS drugs; of these, only 2.99 million or 31% are receiving the drugs.
- These life prolonging drugs are called antiretroviral therapy, which began being widely used in 2006.
- one in every five people living with HIV has not even had their infection diagnosed, let alone reported.
Person 4: HIV/AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease. In the 1960’s it was spreading fast. The second game included in recreation tonight is HIV/AIDS blob.
To play blob, there is one person that is “it,” or has AIDS. When they tag someone, the person they tag becomes It also, and its as though they are being infected. If you are tagged, you stay It the whole game. The last person standing, or the last person not infected with AIDS wins. AIDS is a terrible disease but this helps us understand how it easily it was and still is spread, and it stays with you the rest of your life, because even though there are life-saving drugs to make you live longer, there is no cure for HIV/AIDS.
7:20-7:40: social action: get chai (bracelets)
GET CHAI-HEMP BRACELETS
“What would you think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song,
And I'll try not to sing out of key.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
I get CHAI with a little help from my friends,
Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends.”
1. Most people look at the sixties as a time dominated by hippies and wide drug abuse. Yet, what most people don’t know is the purpose of these drugs. It was not for pure recreation or therapy as most are used today but rather for a spiritual awakening, a personal cleansing, and a way of purifying their lives.
2. This may seem hypocritical in many ways. Purifying one’s life with drugs? But in the sixties, these drugs were thought to keep the hippies away from the evils of the world, whereas now the tables, as far as public opinion is concerned, seem to have turned. Now, drugs are viewed as evil rather than a way of escaping it.
3. So we look to other things to satisfy this need of escaping the world while still having a group of people to back us up. Friends, the ultimate drug. A way of staying CHAI. C-H-A-I. Life.
1. Right now, we will be making hemp bracelets to symbolize the never-ending CHAI of friendship.

7:40-8:00: sisterhood: cutting up the tie-dye sheet, chill
Sisterhood
People 1, 2, and 3:“One thing I can tell you is you got to be free. Come together right now over me”
Person 1: Earlier tonight, everyone drew on an enormous sheet and we made it look tie-dyed.
Person 2: Now, we are going to cut up the sheet and give each of you a piece.
Person 3: Each piece of this sheet is like a piece of a puzzle. The puzzle cannot be finished without every single piece. This is the same with our chapter. Without even one of you our chapter could not be completed.
Person 1: Know that your piece can show how spirited you are for our wonderful chapter of Magic City BBG #186. You can wear it as an armband or a headband at convention!
Person 2: As we give you a piece of our Magic City sheet, please remember how it links you to the rest of our chapter.
Person 3: You are a piece of the puzzle and when assembled. We come together!
Conclusion:
Lauren: Looking back on the program, we donated money to plant trees in Africa, we learned about HIV/AIDS and the civil rights movement that went on during the 1960’s, we learned about getting and staying CHAI, and lastly we learned that we will always have each other.
Ilana: Us MIT’s would like to thank you all for coming to our program! We worked very hard to plan it, and really hope ya’ll had a good time. Welcome to the 60s, but now its time to return back to the millennium. Peace love and MITs 08!
