Non-Traditional Instructional Days (Part 1) - CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.2.c
You must show all work to receive credit.
Day 1 (5 Points)
Find 5 different items at the grocery store. Write down the cost of each item and the quantity (how much there is) in ounces.
Ex: A 20 ounce bottle of Sprite costs $1.49.
Day 2 (10 Points)
Find the unit rate for each item and show your work.
Ex: $2.00 = $.10
20 ounces 1 ounce
Next: What is the relationship between the original rate and the unit rate (explain using a sentence or showing your math work). You may choose to explain your use of the within or between relationships, if applicable.
Day 3 (15 Points)
Calculate the cost of each item if you bought 25, 50, 75, and 100 ounces.
Explain: How this could be helpful in planning a Christmas party.
Day 4 (10 Points)
Create a table with the unit rate, the original rate, and the 100-ounce rate for each item.
Ex:
$.10 / $2.00 / $10.001 / 20 / 100
Cost
Ounces
Explain: How did you fill in the table, and why did you choose to solve it this way? You may choose to explain your use of the within or between relationships, if applicable.
Day 5 (15 Points)
Write a paragraph (3-5 sentences) about how we can use the unit rate to help us save money when going to the grocery.
Explain: Are the tables from the previous day proportional? Why or why not?
Day 1 / Day 2 / Day 3 / Day 4 / Day 5Find how much 5 different items cost (grocery store/sales bill or internet will all work). / Divide the items cost by the measurement (ounces, pounds, etc.) and write that down. / Take the new cost found in Day 2 and multiply the cost times 25, 50, 75 and 100 to find the cost for 25, 50, 75 and 100 ounces, pounds, etc. / Fill in the values you already found in days 2 and 3 and put them in the tables then take the unit cost and multiply by 25 and 75 to find the middle values in the table. / Write 3 to 5 sentences about how finding the unit price (cost for one ounce) can help save money when shopping at different stores.
Write down the cost and how much there is (to keep it simple try and find items with the same type of measurements (ounces, pounds, etc.). / Write down what you noticed when dividing the original rate and the unit rate. / Write down why finding the unit rate is useful when trying to plan a holiday party with a lot of people. / Explain how you were able to fill the tables. / Find if the tables you created on Day 4 are proportional (come to the same amount when divided).
