Terminology:

Batting Average--- The number of hits divided by the times at bat.

Blooper—A batted fly ball that goes just over the head of the infielders and just in front of the outfielders.

Count—The number of balls and strikes on the batter

Double Header—Two games, one played after the other, during the same day

Double Play—Two outs made in succession during the time the pitcher throws the ball and receives it back again for the next pitch.

Clean Up Hitter—The number four batter in the batting order.

Error—A misplay or mistake made by a member of the defensive team which allows either the batter to continue batting or a base-runner to advance bases.

Force Out—An out as a result of a defensive player with the ball tagging a runner or the base to which the base runner must go because the batter became a base runner.

Foul Ball—A batted ball, wither on the ground or in the air, that lands outside the

foul line.

Full Count—When a batter has three balls and two strikes

Grand Slam—The batter hits a homerun with the bases loaded.

Hot Corner—The third base area.

Inning— when BOTH offensive and defensive teams have been at bat and each team has made three outs.

On Deck—The player in line to follow the batter at the plate.

Shortstop—Infield position between second and third base.

Strike—A ball thrown by the pitcher which crosses the plate between the batter’s knees and arm pits which he does not swing at or swings at and misses. Also, a ball that is hit into foul territory and is not caught for an out.

Situations/Rules:

**The game of softball first became popular in the 1930’s.

**There is 60 feet between each base.

**There is 6 outs in a complete inning.

**First base is the only base a base runner is allowed to over run.

**There are 7 innings in a game

**Defense—team playing in the field

**Offense—team that is hitting

**A base runner does not have to be tagged on a force out

**The first baseman should have her foot on the inside corner of the base.

** There are 3 outfield positions—Left Field/Center Field/ Right Field

**When a base runner crosses home plate, it is called a run.

**There are 9 official positions in the game of softball

**Any fair or foul ball that is caught results in the batter being out

**When the ball reaches the base before the base runner does, the result is that the base runner is out.
