Latin American Studies Conferences held annually in Krakow are one the most important events in Poland, devoted to the Latin American issues. Next, already 4th conference will be held in April 8-10th, 2016, by Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, of the Jagiellonian University. This time its topic is the contemporary Latin American migrations and diasporas.
Latin American migrations are currently one of the most debated topics of the global discussions around the role of Latin America in the world.
Multidimensional and dynamic in nature, the migration processes shaped and still are shaping this region. Sending as well as receiving countries are affected at various levels of their functioning by internal and external migration flows. Without doubt the migrants impact the host societies, in result the racial, cultural, economic relations are being transformed. As far as the legislation is concerned, migration processes push for the new legal frameworks, those intent is to regulate this dynamic social phenomenon as well as to accommodate the human rights standards established by international treaties. Furthermore in the current international context, of war on drugs and war on terrorism, migration is treated as a security concern.
Next year conference aims to open a broad discussion on the nature of the migration in Latin America as well as to facilitate the conversation between the academics and professional experts during the panels and workshops.
We would like to invite especially sociologists, anthropologists, linguists, political scientists, as well as any other specialists whose work is dedicated to the conference topic. We call for proposals that tackle the following issues:
- conditions and forms of the contemporary migration processes in and out of Latin America
- factors shaping and underlying Latin American migrations
- migration studies in the region- its theoretical and methodological challenges
- Latin American diasporas
- impact of the diasporas on host and sending societies
- migration and migrants in art, literatures, and media.
