Job’s Purpose / One of the key objectives for Microsoft New Zealand for the next 12 months is cementing the .NET platform into the Enterprise. This role relates to an open vacancy in the Auckland office.
The job will involve working closely witharchitects, development managersand corporate developers in Microsoft New Zealand’s enterprise accounts and key System Integrator partners to educate,create awareness & build momentum around MS development tools & the .NET platform.
Understanding interoperability (rather than migration) between Java/J2EE and the .NET platform is critical and an awareness of software development lifecycle tools is desirable.
Key metrics relate to the creation of customer evidence showing the use of our most recent technology and are technology at work in enterprise class systems.
This includes establishing & maintaining technical relationships with the corporate developers and architects in the region, facilitating community event and technology workshops at on-site locations and owning/executing the New Zealand architects program.
You must be a seasoned presenter of technical material. We are looking for a technology leader, who understands competitive & market trends & can provide a guidance roadmap to the enterprise community on our .NET strategy.

Establishing & maintaining technical relationships with the enterprise architects, maintaining the Auckland Architect Community including hostingpresentations at architect & developer events and delivering technology workshops at on-site locations. Planning & delivering architectural design sessions for enterprise customers and System Integrator organizations. / 40
Engaging with new partners, working with competitive vendors, local and international partners and helping with existing work in progress to reach .NET in the enterprise goals. / 40
Understand competition, market trends & can provide a guidance roadmap to the architect community on our .NET strategy. / 10
Speak to executives in small groups in business terms (distil technology into business solutions), as well as the ability to interact with customers at a business-level and cultivate a relationship sufficient to achieve our short-term goals. / 10

Position scope /
  • Identifies and manages the most diverse and complex scope of solutions/products and their interaction with underlying operating environments. In particular, the role is laser focused on the critical decision about operating platform - i.e. J2EE vs. Microsoft .Net.
  • Acts as business or technical resource for broad and complex issues, and often assigned primary responsibility for presales architecting of specific solutions - especially where the choice of middleware model is pivotal to a successful Microsoft outcome.
  • Provides leadership in business or process planning and guidance to customers and other stakeholders in the solution adoption process.
  • Strategically analyzes the risks, benefits, and opportunities associated with adoption.

Decision making /
  • Works with the Microsoft Enterprise team to identify accounts where we should place our focus.
  • Consistently makes insightful, timely decisions in the most difficult and frequently complex situations.
  • Consistently encourages others to apply “lessons learned” to current decisions.
  • Uses a mixture of analysis, business acumen, experience and judgment to make high level decisions frequently.
  • Most decisions have the potential to significantly impact other groups within defined accounts; therefore this role requires a well developed ability to understand the dependencies and implications of decisions and achieve consensus with internal account stakeholders.
  • Decisions may assist in the immediate impact to Microsoft’s revenue.

Strategy and Development /
  • Needs to balance between technical depth & business acumen on architectural competencies while being extremely focused & pragmatic on the achievement of short term objectives.
  • Owns development and execution of the enterprise architects program for New Zealand.
  • Able to identify the strategic, rather than just tactical, implications of various customer decisions, motivations, and other events and develop plans that optimise both the customers' and Microsoft's outcomes against these
  • Understands complex customer solution requirements for several customers at a number of levels - infrastructure, product, development platform etc. Typically provides the thought leadership for the technology aspects of strategies/plans to achieve Microsoft and customer objectives.
  • Maintains ongoing development of strategies and tactics in response to the changing dynamics of the competitive landscape - especially within target accounts. This ongoing mandate will deliver input not only to the account teams with whom they operate, but will also serve as a primary input to senior decision making around the whole area of the J2EE competitive threat.

People Management /
  • Whilst the role has no direct management responsibility, it will require good team work with the entire account team (account manager, solution specialist, support, consulting and other stakeholders) and will, on occasion, orchestrate these team members and external organizations around specific opportunities.
  • Able to operate positively with other team members as part of a diverse team and act as an implicit agent of change for driving .NET into the enterprise.

Communication/Business Relationships /
  • This role is very closely aligned with the enterprise sales force and enterprise customer base. Communication skills are very important, both internally and externally to senior technical & business decision maker level.
  • Independently articulates and mentors others on product/solution offering strategies demonstrating an expert understanding of both the customers' business and competitive landscape.
  • Where required, independently delivers highly articulate and effective strategic presentations to audiences of all sizes - including representing MS at the largest and most visible industry events. This may include the mentoring of others.
  • A minimum of 40% of time will be spent in Wellington with government and banking accounts.

  • This is a non-quota role; bonus is based on achievement of annual goals & objectives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities /
  • A strong knowledge of at least one Microsoft language, (C# and Visual Basic preferred) and a high level understanding of UNIX, Java, J2EE and interoperability of heterogeneous platforms.
  • A strong understanding of Enterprise Application Architecture, Middleware/Application Servers and Infrastructure & the ability to look at product architectural documents and identify potential issues.
  • A working knowledge of COM and be able to articulate differences between CORBA, J2EE, COM and COM+.
  • A working knowledge of the .NET Framework and CLR would be advantageous, as well as being able to build functional sample code, and having a working knowledge of databases and data access methodologies
  • A working knowledge of Software Lifecycle tools.
