CBS Student Wins Language Learner of the Year

A Leaving Certificate student in the CBS, Brajan Mazurkiewicz, was honoured last Friday with the title of ‘Language Learner of the Year 2013’, one of only five students across the country to receive this prestigious accolade.

The competition which is organised annually by Leargas - a Department of Education organisation which promotes international exchange and language acquisition - is open to all primary, secondary and third level students. The Language Learner of the Year award recognises outstanding achievements of individual language learners, who have tackled the challenges of learning a language and emerged with significantly improved language skills.

Brajan was nominated by French teacher, Mrs. Marion Kilroy, because of the extraordinary aptitude for language learning that he had demonstrated. Born in Poland, Brajan has lived in Ireland for the past seven years. In addition to his native tongue, Brajan has achieved a high level of fluency in English, Spanish and French. He can also understand and converse in Irish, German and Portuguese and is studying Russian, Japanese, Danish and Dutch at beginner’s level.

Brajan, his family and teacher Mrs. Kilroy, were present last Friday at the awards ceremony which took place in the Marino Institute of Education, Dublin. The awards were presented by Professor David Crystal, a renowned writer, editor, lecturer and broadcaster who has presented many television programmes for the BBC on language development and linguistics.

In awarding Brajan, the jury said: “Brajan demonstrates excellent multilingual capacity and develops this through self-directed learning. He also shows the effective use of social media in language”.

We congratulate Brajan and wish him the best of luck in his future studies.

FIRST YEAR FOOTBALL

The current crop of first year footballers made a very successful start to their Connacht League campaign against St Louis Kiltimagh in the Hyde on Thursday 10th of October. In what were near perfect conditions, the CBS dominated the game from the start with early goals opening a gap that Kiltimagh would never mange close. Credit to the CBS however as they continued right to the end with the same ferocity and determination they began with, to eventually run out winners 9-15 to 4-5. The first competitive outing in the CBS colours represents an important milestone for this group of players who will go on to represent the school at Juvenile, Junior and Senior levels. SENIOR HURLING COUNTY FINAL

Congratulations to former students Kieran Coyle (Manager), Connor Coyle, Darren Fallon and Cathal Dolan, members of the Four Roads team who claimed a sixth consecutive Senior Hurling title last Sunday. Also commiserations to the Oran team which contained a large number of former CBS students.

UNDER 16 HURLING FINAL

Commiserations to the Under 16 Oran team who were narrowly defeated by Pearse’s last Sunday. Particular mention to CBS Students Darragh Walsh, Brian Diffley, Eoghan Grady, Ciaran Hoare, Jack Gunning, Conor Shanagher, Paul Brandon and Shane Casey who all acquitted themselves very well despite the defeat.

UNDER 16 DIVISION 2 FOOTBALL FINAL

Commiserations to CBS Students Daniel Foley, Gavin Carberry, Steven Walsh and Eran Farrell members of the St Faithleach’s team who were defeated by Strokestown last Sunday.

MEMBERS OF THE 1943/1944 ALL IRELAND WINNING TEAM

A number of CBS students recently made the short trip across the road to visit the Roscommon GAA exhibition in the County Library. Roscommon CBS has a long and illustrious association with the Roscommon Senior Football team, with former students appearing on teams regularly. With that in mind and given the recent anniversary it would be remiss of us not to recognise those former students who were members of the successful 1943 and 1944 All Ireland winning teams. Members of the 1943 team included: No.8 Liam Gilmartin (Ballymurray), No.5 Brendan Lynch, No.6 Bill Carlos R.I.P (Ballintober), No.10 Felim Murray R.I.P (Knockcroghery) N0.14 Jack McQuillan R.I.P (Ballyforan). Former student Gerry Dolan R.I.P (Church St Roscommon) was also member of the successful 1944 team.

F1 IN SCHOOLS PLANNING STAGES

ICT Irelands formula one in schools competition returns this year with transition year students from the CBS taking part once again. Teams of students are currently in the planning stages of the competition with plans to be submitted after the mid-term break. F1 in Schools™ is a global multi-disciplinary competition that challenges secondary school students to design, build and race miniature compressed-air powered balsa wood Formula One™ cars. The competition inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership, teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way. Transition years in the school have been involved in the competition for the past three years and we hope to have continued success this year.

CBS Roscommon Golf Team Qualify for Connaught Plate Final

The CBS Roscommon, Senior Schools golf team, qualified for the Connaught Plate final (best nett score) in Claremorris last Thursday. In the final the team took on Gort Community College. The format was five single matches with shots being given on handicap.
The top match was a tight affair with David Hill (4) pushing all the way. Unfortunately David lost his match on the 19th. The second match had David’s brother, and current Connaught U15 Interprovincial, Allan (6).
Unfortunately things did not Allan’s way on the day and he fell at 14th.This put pressure on the tail matches. James Walker (6) played solid golf all day and was a convincing 4 and 3 winner. John Kennedy (10) rallied late on to win his match on the 17th. Suddenly at 2-2 all eyes turned to the final match. In great excitement and tension Jack McGahan (14) had a great win on the 18th hole to push the match into overtime. Having halved the 19th Jack produced the shot of the day at the par 3 20th hitting his tee shot to 9 inches and sealing victory.
This is a great win for such a young team and hopefully we will see them compete for National honours in the years to come.

Golf Cup In Memory of CBS Teacher

The CBS Roscommon Senior Schools golf team, who qualified for the Connaught
Plate final, were playing in the Tony Kearney Memorial Cup, which was won by Calasantius College, Oranmore.

Tony Kearney taught accounting, economics, mathematics and English at the C.B.S. from 1959-1987. Tony, whose sudden death on the 5th April 1987, plunged the school and wider community into deep grief. Tony was a noted golfer and deeply involved in the promotion of the game at schools and Provincial level.

His teaching colleagues at the C.B.S., conscious of his huge commitment to the promotion of golf in the school, were privileged to be associated with the presentation of a Cup to his memory.

The semi-finals were played in Castledargan in Sligo, while the finals for the Cup and Plate were staged in Claremorris. Congratulations to the CBS lads in capturing the Plate, and to Calasanctius, Oranmore for winning such a prestigious schools golf prize.

CBS Participate in NUIG Business Quiz

Well done to CBS students who recently participated in the NUI Galway Western Region Schools Quiz which took place recently in the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics at NUI Galway. The table quiz, organised by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Business Studies Teachers Association of Ireland (BSTAI) is an annual event held for Junior Certificate students of Business Studies.

Educational Tour

Transition Year students from Roscommon CBS recently enjoyed an educational trip to Dublin. First stop was the Chocolate Warehouse, a traditional Irish manufacturer of chocolate, and part of the Caffrey Group. Here students took part in a two hour activity which included a presentation about the business. They were informed about the importance of hygiene, health and safety, food traceability, staff training, the EU, importing and exporting and marketing and promotion. As it is an Irish owned company, the importance of buying Irish was also stressed to students. Reference was also made to the death of sugar beet farming in Ireland and its effect on the Irish economy.

After this, students got to see a 20 minute film about the history of chocolate and were shown different samples of chocolate and cocoa beans in various forms or at different stages of production. Next was a tour of the premises followed by a 40 minute activity where each student was shown how to prepare, decorate and package chocolate for sale. They then got to decorate and package their own products to bring with them. To finish, they took part in a table quiz based on what they had heard, learned and experienced and were presented with a certificate of participation.

The next stop was Croke Park for the stadium tour. Here students spent two hours touring the stadium and getting a behind-the-scenes look at what is done on match day. It began with a screening of a 15 minute film in the ultra modern media room. Next was the museum and activity centre where each student got to take part in tests such as the standing jump gauge, accuracy drills, reaction times tests and a drill which measured how hard they could hit a sliotar. A pitch-side walk and tour of the dressing rooms and warm-up area followed before they visited the Ard Comhairle and the highest seats in the stadium.

The day finished with a stop in the Liffey Valley shopping centre before returning to the school. All agreed that it was a great day out. It is hoped that students will put the knowledge they learned from these different businesses to use in their student enterprises this year.

Junior Football

Roscommon CBS 5 – 10 Garbally College 1 – 3

The junior footballers of Roscommon CBS got their league campaign off to a good start with a healthy win over Garbally College in Lisnamult. In difficult conditions a brace of early points from Richard Hughes was followed by a goal from Conor Shanagher. Two more goals from Kieran Whyte were followed by a point from Jack Gunning and another point from Whyte. The only downside was a nasty injury suffered by Shane Casey. In the second half further goals followed from Richard Hughes and Stephen Walsh. There were outstanding performances from Brian Diffley and Daniel Foley in the forwards and Adam Whyte in defence. This team are training hard at present and will face two tough league games after mid-term. A speedy recovery is wished to Shane Casey.

LCVP Visit-In

Sean Mulry, proprietor of the Pepper Mill restaurant spoke to 6th Year LCVP students recently. With such an emphasis on enterprise in their course, he was willing to share his experiences as an entrepreneur with them. Students were fascinated to hear about the importance of decision making, recruitment and training, record keeping, health and safety and adherence to industrial legislation. Sean had lots of advice about starting your own business and more importantly maintain and expanding it. All students were very grateful and appreciative for this insight which should prove extremely useful.

First Year Football

St Nathy’s 5-8 Roscommon CBS 8-10

Our first year footballers made it back to back victories in the Connacht League recently after a hard fought win over St Nathy’s College in Ballaghaderreen. It was Nathy’s who started the better opening up a four point lead with an early goal and point. The CBS responded with two points but the Ballaghaderreen side continue their dominance with unanswered points and another goal. Both sides then traded pointed scores, but it was the CBS who finished the better with a goal and two points to leave the scores level at half time, 2-7 to 3-4.

Once again Nathy’s started the second period the better with an early goal. Cian Murray responded for the CBS with a point but Nathy’s would further increase their lead with another well taken goal. Nathy’s added another point opening up a six point lead. Crucially however this would be Nathy’s last score of the game as the CBS clawed their way back into the game, two well taken points and goal reduced the gap to one. The Roscommon men now began to dominate possession and crucially were converting it into scores as the game was soon level. Substitute Jack McGahon raised the green flag again for the CBS to give them a three point advantage which the CBS would never relinquish.
