VISAS NOT TO APPLY FOR

People who enter Australia with the intention of undertaking training should not apply for a subclass 600 (tourist stream) or subclass 601/651 (tourist purpose), as these visas are limited in their scope. People who apply for one of these visas must intend to visit Australia for a holiday, recreation or to visit family of friends.

If they intend to undertake training in Australia and they apply for a subclass 600 (tourist stream) or subclass 601/651 (tourist purpose), they face the possibility of visa application refusal or, even if the visa is granted to them, they may have their visa cancelled at the airport (if questioned by Immigration) or during their stay in Australia (if Immigration discovers that they are in breach of their visa conditions).

Separately, the University should avoid allowing a 600/601/651 visa holder to undertake:

  • any work (even for free) as that would be a breach of Immigration law and expose the University to sanctions; and
  • any training (or any activities inconsistent with the scope of the visa), as this may lead to the suggestion that the University has contributed to the visa holder breaching their visa.

Please see the attached information (below) on Occupational Trainee (student) and Academic Information regarding visa applications, and forward this information to visitors that you are considering hosting.
