Dear Parent/Carer

BIG BANG FAIR – THURSDAY, 16TH MARCH 2017

I am writing to inform you of an exciting opportunity. We are able to offer selected students places to attend the Big Bang Fair at the NEC in Birmingham on Thursday 16th March 2017. The exhibition is not only a great day out, but is an excellent opportunity to meet some of the country’s leading scientists and engineers.

There are numerousactivities, shows and events to see during the day such as:

-The Detective Project:Students will be challenged to investigate their own crime scene based around a suspicious death. They will discover how detectives really examine the scene, preserve evidence and work out who did what to whom and why.

-Accelerator Dual: Students can sprint through a 10 metre inflatable tunnel against their friends and compare their acceleration to the world’s fastest sprinters! Students can compare their times on a giant leader board and compete against times set by Usain Bolt, Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill.

-Gaia- Mapping the Milky Way from Space: Students will use the interactive exhibition to explore the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, which is currently exploring the Milky Way. Gaia involves extraordinary technology and impressive precision. For example, a typical Gaia measurement has accuracy equivalent to resolving a 20p coin on the moon!

-Medical Mavericks – Mini Medics: Students will get the chance to use the same medical equipment as seen in hospitals like ultrasounds, retina scans, ECGs and may even be able to take blood from a fake arm!

I would suggest bringing a packed lunch. There is a tuck shop available at the venue, however, the NEC can be quite expensive. Visitors are encouraged to carry as little as possible around the event with them. There will be a manned cloakroom facility onsite where visitors can store bags, coats and luggage at a cost of £1 per item per day.

We will be leaving school at 9.00am, this allows pupils to go to their morning registration and inform tutors that they will be on a trip and then meet on the fire drill area. We will be leaving the NEC at 2.15pm and therefore, depending on traffic, we should be back for the end of the school day.

With car parking and transport costs we can offer these tickets for £5.60 per person. This will be offered to pupils via Parentpay on a first come, first served basis. If you have any further questions then please do not hesitate to contact me

All bona fide educational visits by the school are covered by the Academy’s public liability insurance, as are all in-school activities. This visit is considered to have only normal everyday risks and no further insurance has been provided.

Yours sincerely
