CCSF Journalism Student Lands Staff Photographer Job at S.F. Chronicle

Former Guardsman Editor-in-Chief Santiago Mejia is now a full-time staff photographer for The San Francisco Chronicle.

Mejia is currently working on a journalism degree and certificate from the department. This summer he served as a photography intern at the New York Times. The award-winning photographer also completed an advanced journalism-training program at Chips Quinn in New York City.

CCSF’s Gonzales Beams with Pride as Newspaper He Founded Wins Awards

Journalism Department Chair Juan Gonzales has a lot more to smile about these days. El Tecolote, the biweekly, bilingual newspaper he founded in the Mission District in 1970, captured eight journalism awards on Oct. 8 in the 2016 Greater Bay Area Journalism Contest sponsored by the San Francisco Peninsula Press Club.

This was the first time El Tecolote competed for journalism awards in its 46-year history. The newspaper took First Place in Blog/Commentary, Second Place in Editorial Cartooning, Third Place in Photography/Series, Third Place in Editorial Opinion, Second Place in Feature Story/Light, Third Place in Feature Story/Serious, Third Place in Page Design, and First Place in Sports Feature.

The Guardsman Captures 17 Awards at Annual JACC NorCal Conference

City College’s Guardsman staff picked-up 17 awards at the Oct. 15 regional conference of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges held at Los Medanos Community College.

The annual event attracted some 160 students representing 14 Northern California community colleges to the one-day conference. The conference hosted skill development workshops, on-the-spot contests, and one-on-one critique sessions with professional journalists.

Guardsman faculty adviser Juan Gonzales led a delegation of 15 students to the conference that annual takes place in the fall semester. The Fall 2017 NorCal conference is planned for DeAnza Community College.

Six City College journalism students captured awards at the 2016 national convention of the Associated Collegiate Press held Oct. 20-23 in Washington, D.C.
