Germany

Fast Facts:

·  Germany receives the largest number of asylum applications in Europe.

·  The number of asylum applications to Europe rose 25% from 2014 to 2015; the same percentages of asylum seekers are under the age of 18.

Summary:

Germany accepts about 30% of Europe’s asylum seekers and refugees. The total number of refugees to Europe is estimated to have been ~436,000 in 2014. This number is expected to grow. Many asylum seekers apply for refuge from northern Africa and the Middle East; xenophobia- the (often unfounded) fear of strangers and foreigners- has led to difficulties for immigrants to Germany to acclimate and to be integrated. In 2014 Germany reported 150 attacks of asylum seekers by extremists.

The German government, as well as privately run organizations, provide various forms of aid to refugees and asylum seekers.
