THE LOCAL AREA

Corsham Primary School is situated in the Wiltshire town of Corsham, only a few miles away from the beautiful city of Bath. The school is in a largely residential area of Victorian and post World War II properties, with some newer local housing developments. There are good local shopping and community facilities. The school is readily accessible with links by public transport being close to Bath and Chippenham mainline stations and the M4 motorway.

THE SCHOOLBUILDING AND SITE

The school takes its origin from the “Methuen” school, founded by Paul Methuen in 1816, over 50 years before the passing of the Compulsory Education Act of 1870. The school was expanded in 1895 and again after World War II. The original 1800 buildings are still standing.

The school was moved to new buildings on Pound Pill in February 1994. The new school is of a modern design with a central atrium, administration facilities, hall, kitchen and fourteen classrooms. The school also accommodates a fully interactive 4D library. The grounds contain a sports field, two playgrounds and two adventure playgrounds.

In September 2007 the school expanded again when it took over the leadership and management of the old BoxHighlandsPrimary School on the outskirts of Corsham town. Corsham Primary is now based at two sites the first being located on the Pound Pill and the second on Broadwood Avenue.

The school at Broadwood Avenue was built twenty nine years ago and like Pound Pill it boasts wonderful grounds and school buildings.

SCHOOL ORGANISATION

At Pound Pill pupils are organised according to age into 14 classes comprising two classes per year group and at Broadwood the children are organised into 7 classes comprising one class per year group.

BROOK CENTRE (POUND PILL)

After the move to the new school premises in Pound Pill in 1994 the Governors supported the local authority plan to incorporate the North Wiltshire Language Unit within the school. The Brook Centre caters for children with specific language disorders and has its own complement of staff working within the overall management framework of the school. Although the unit is financed directly by the local authority, the management of the budget and all relevant responsibilities have been delegated to the Governing Body. Wiltshire's Education Department manages all admissions to the Brook Centre. All eighteen places are currently occupied.

CULTURAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUND

Pupil attendance is generally good. The school benefits from supportive parents, a 90% attendance at open evenings is usual, due to the establishment of a structured appointment system and the staff’s commitment to accommodating parents at alternative, more convenient times should the need arise. Parents are also encouraged to make contact with teachers throughout the year. The ethnic composition of pupils is not diverse. The majority of children are from white, English, Christian backgrounds.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

17% of children within the main school are presently on the Special Needs Register.

STAFFING

The teaching staff offer a wide range of experience and are at various levels of the pay spine. Presently the main school is fully staffed, the full time equivalent number of teachers being 34 plus the Executive Headteacher. This provides 21class teachers and one Inclusion Manager. Teaching staffing levels within the Brook Centre are presently 3 part-time teachers and 2 speech and language therapists.

SCHOOL ETHOS

The school’s main aim is to enable each child to have an equal opportunity to achieve the highest academic and personal potential. This has the commitment of all the staff. This is further emphasised through the desire to create an effective partnership between all staff, pupils and parents.

CURRICULUM

Pupils in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are taught for 24 hours per week. Our curriculum meets all National Curriculum requirements and was judged by Ofsted as Outstanding (July 2013).The school has a manageable system for assessing, recording and reporting pupils’ attainment and achievement. There is a strong emphasis on pupils taking responsibility for their own personal learning and development targets.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT

In July 2013 Corsham Primary School was again judged by Ofsted as Outstanding. We are all very proud of this achievement.
