BASIC COURSE
This course is the foundation for all other Learning & Leading courses. In this course you are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended. Participants are invited to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in their discipleship. The course offers guidelines for best practices as a church leader and in mission and ministry in the community and in daily life. Participants must have their pastor’s permission to enroll. This course will be taught by Mrs. Vicki Holder, a Certified Lay Servant and member of Whitesburg UMC.
ADVANCED COURSES (choose 1)
From Your Heart to Theirs: Delivering an Effective Sermon (Preaching Course)
Moving beyond the basics of public speaking and the foundations necessary for preparing an engaging sermon, this course also includes types of sermons – from exegetical to topical to children’s sermons – as well as how to find a story, use the hymnal, and how to move from communication on paper to beyond the paper. This class will be taught by Rev. Yolanda Jones-Colton, pastor of the Smith Chapel UMC in Newnan.
Transforming Evangelism (UM Heritage Course)
This course leads participants to learn from John Wesley how to practice relational evangelism. They will discover that evangelism involves not only sharing our faith with others, but also welcoming people into a community where they can grow in faith. This course will be taught by Rev. Angie Crummie, pastor at Trinity UMC in Durand.
Attendance is important! You must attend all class sessionsand complete all assignments to get credit for the course.
Registration Deadline is Feb. 22. There will be no late registration or registration at the door. We cannot guarantee refunds will be issued after the registration deadline has passed. We will make every effort to have all of the books available in the District Office one week prior to the first class. You are encouraged to pick up your books so you can begin some of the reading before the classes start.
LAY SERVANT
MINISTRY
Lay Servants/Speakers are professing church members who are well informed on and committed to the Scriptures and the doctrine, heritage, organization and life of the United Methodist Church, eager to enhance their spiritual gifts and develop new skills in witnessing to the Christian faith through communicating, leading and caring ministries.
Local Church Lay Servant –must take the Basic Course with their pastor’s approval, receive Charge Conference approval, and complete the Lay Servant Annual Report Form.
Certified Lay Servant - must meet all of the requirements aboveand complete an advanced lay servant class. To be renewed, they must complete an advanced course every 3 years. Certified lay servants serve in their own churches, in other churches and through district or conference projects and programs.
Certified Lay Speakers are Certified Lay Servants who are called and equipped to provide pulpit supply in the absence of a pastor. In addition to Certified Lay Servant Requirements 6 advanced classes must be completed and the individualmust be approved by the District and Conference. The approved lay speaking classes include courses in the following areas: Worship, Prayer, Discovering Spiritual Gifts, Preaching, United Methodist Heritage & United Methodist Polity.
