Proposed Foundational-Level Mathematics Subject Matter Program+ B. A. in Mathematics with concentration in Bi-Disciplinary Mathematics (teaching option)

Sonoma State’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics currently offers a B. A. in Mathematics with concentration in Bi-Disciplinary Mathematics. We propose a subject matter program which would satisfy both the Foundational-Level requirements and the Bi-Disciplinary major requirements. This Bi-Disciplinary option would be very attractive to students who would like to become teachers in two subject areas but who do not want to complete the full secondary teaching track. Currently some of these students just take the CSET before entering the credential program. The proposed set of courses would serve as a much better mathematics preparation for a Foundation -Level Mathematics credential. A second group of potential students would be the strongest mathematics students among those preparing for the multiple subjects credential.

The below table shows the courses in our current approved Subject Matter Waiver Program for Mathematics and the subset of those which comprise the mathematics courses of our proposed Foundational Level/Bi-Disciplinary Major Program.

Total Units for SMP/FLM / 53-56 / 37-39 +2*
Total Upper Division Units / 26-29 / 14*

* The 2 units of 390 do not qualify as part of FLM 32-unit minimum, nor as upper division units for the Bi-Disciplinary concentration. 390 is a prerequisite for 490, and contains the fieldwork hours to satisfy an entrance requirement into SSU’s Credential Program.

** One option would be CS 115(4 units) and Physics 114(4 units), which are in the approved SMP.
