Thank you for your interest in the course. Because of the large number of requests for this small seminar, an application form has become necessary. Please read the instructions carefully.
Admission to the class will be based on this application, which is due at 5:00pm on Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Applications may be submitted via email (to Megan Davis, ) or in person at the Center for Politics (465 Crestwood Drive).
The seminar/internship is limited to 15 students. All applicants will be notified as to their status in the class by email, no later than 5:00pm on Tuesday, May 6, 2008.
The commitment required for the class is between 8-10 hours per week, along with an academic component to broaden the interns’ knowledge of the political process and evaluate their progress in the class. The interest for this class has been extremely high in past semesters, so it is wise to schedule another class as a back-up in the event that you are not selected. Due to the limited number of spaces, preference will be given first to 4th year politics majors, followed by 3rd year majors.
Internship activities will include participation in Center for Politics events, research for Center projects, support work for Center programs and initiatives, and planning of conferences, speakers, events, etc. Each student will be assigned to a specific project and the work done on that project will contribute to each student’s grade. There will be some writing required, such as research reports, proposals, press releases, etc. The extent of this will be determined by the nature of the project to which the student is assigned. This written work will count towards the student’s grade. More information about the academic component of the class/internship will be available in the syllabus, to be distributed to all accepted students on May 6.
The class will meet for the first time on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 3:00pm at the Center for Politics to go over general information about the course and its components (THERE IS NO MEETING ON AUGUST 27 AS INDICATED IN THE COURSE OFFERING DIRECTORY). Accepted students will establish their own schedule with the Center for Politics staff member to whom they are primarily assigned, and most of the internship will be completed at the Center. The class will meet as a whole on a few other occasions during the semester for a guest speaker or other activity.
