H.C.R. 293

House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2004 Burr and Burton Academy Lady Bulldogs’ Division II championship girls’ ice hockey team

Offered by: Representatives Livingston of Manchester, Freed of Dorset, Hube of Londonderry, Baker of West Rutland, Bostic of St. Johnsbury, Clark of Vergennes, Connell of Warren, Crawford of Burke, Crowley of West Rutland, Donahue of Northfield, Endres of Milton, Flory of Pittsford, Houston of Ferrisburgh, Johnson of Canaan, Kainen of Hartford, Kilmartin of Newport City, LaVoie of Swanton, Marron of Stowe, Obuchowski of Rockingham, Perry of Richford, Shaw of Derby, Sweeney of Colchester, Sweetser of Essex, Westman of Cambridge and Zuckerman of Burlington

Offered by: Senators Bloomer, Maynard, Mullin, Sears and Shepard

Whereas, in 2002, Burr and Burton Academy inaugurated a girls’ ice hockey team which sadly concluded the season with not even a single victory, and

Whereas, from the moment they skated on the ice for the opening face-off last fall, the Lady Bulldogs, not unlike the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, proved that hockey miracles do occur, and

Whereas, the Lady Bulldogs’ robust and enthusiastic play was on display throughout the regular season and the playoff tournament, and

Whereas, when the Lady Bulldogs took their positions on the icy surface at Norwich University’s Kreitzberg Arena to confront their opponents, the Northfield High School Marauders, for the Division II championship title, they were a totally transformed team from the one that skated in 2002-2003, and

Whereas, in order to dispel any doubt that Burr and Burton Academy was a championship contender, Lady Bulldog Kelsey Cone scored the game’s opening goal in the first period after teammates Louisa Michl and Chelsea Edson created a timely setup, and

Whereas, although Northfield scored a goal a few minutes later, the second period consisted of a scoreless tie in large measure due to Lady Bulldog goalie Marti Ann McBride’s great defensive performance, and

Whereas, in the third period, with just 5:47 remaining in regulation play, Nadine McBride broke the tie and placed the Lady Bulldogs in a 2-1 lead, and two minutes later, she sealed her team’s historic victory by scoring a second goal, and

Whereas, these amazing young hockey players, including Tori Kraft, Marie Vandekar, Katherine Scovner, Aubrey Edson, Kaitlin Lees, Brittney Herrmann, Elizabeth Hand, Louisa Michl, Meredith Ams, Lauren Read, Michele Read, Chelsea Edson, Kelsey Cone, Carol Beckwith, Sarah Pinsonault, Nadine McBride, Shalee Crandall, and Marti Ann McBride, have proven that spunk, dedication, and practice can lead to winning results, and

Whereas, Head Coaches Paul Schwindt and Jim Hand, along with assistant coaches Chip Edson and Mark Read, share much of the credit for the Lady Bulldogs triumphant 19-1-2 season, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the amazing 2004 Burr and Burton Academy Lady Bulldogs’ division II championship girls’ ice hockey team, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Paul Schwindt at Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester.
