Press Release
ARMY DAZE
Michael Chiang’s Army Daze returns to the stage after a sold-out run last year!
After a massively successful run staged to sold-out crowds last year, the 25th anniversary production of Michael Chiang’s Army Daze is back for an encore performance.Having received an overwhelming response from the public after its limited run last year, the creative team of Army Daze is excited to stage the production once again for those who missed it or want to catch it again. With the recent success of Ah Boys to Men helping to renew interest in National Service, the public can anticipate another side-splitting army-themed show to tickle their funny bone when they catch this production.
Army Daze was created when Michael Chiang first published a humour book in 1985 entitled Army Daze. It instantly became a bestseller and promptly knocked Sidney Sheldon off the No. 1 spot on the bestsellers’ list. This book provided the inspiration for the full-length stage play, which was written and staged in 1987. Centred on the adventures and challenges of five 18-year-olds undergoing basic military training, the play made local history by having 18 sell-out shows.
The play returned for three major runs in 1990, 1995 and 2006, before aspanking new production was staged last year. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the popular comedy, Army Daze was mounted a play with songs. The much-loved story about the BMT adventures of recruits Malcolm, Ah Beng, Johari, Krishna & Kenny was refreshed for this anniversary version and met with a smashing reception.
Army Daze is believed to be the most successful stage comedy in Singapore to date, having sold nearly 55,000 tickets over its various runs.
Army Daze was made into a movie in 1996 by Cathay Films, when its box-office success quickly sparked interest in Singapore-made films. It took in $1.6million, and held the record for being the highest-grossing local English-language film for more than 15 years.
Directed by Beatrice Chia-Richmond and produced by Annie Pek, Army Daze brings togethera cast of fresh faces and seasoned actors. With a refreshed script and original songs composed by songwriter-producer Don Richmond, old fans and new audiences will be delighted!
Army Daze runs from 19th July – 28th July 2013 at the Drama Centre Theatre.
