Course Introduction:
By the end of this course, students should be able to speak Japanese fluently and correctly in everyday conversation, to express their ideas and opinions on a variety of simple topics, and to deliver a short report in Japanese on the basis of teamwork. They are required to put in use the language points learned from the textbook or in other courses. They are also expected to develop cultural tolerance and cross-cultural communication competence.
A variety of activities will be carried out in class to develop students’ ability to communicate in Japanese in everyday situations, as well as about such topics as campus life and college study, and to improve their comprehensive competence in cross-cultural communication. This course is intended for students who have no previous experience in Japanese learning. As a complement course to Japanese Intensive Reading, it will reinforce students’ impression of what they have learned from that course. The situational dialogues in audio or visual materials will give them a chance to review the language points that they have learned in other courses, and develop their basic communicative competence.
In this course students will learn to speak Japanese in a right intonation, correct their wrong pronunciation through constant practice, and improve their ability in identifying a specific sound in Japanese. By the end of this course they will be able to comprehend a text read in Japanese at a normal speed, in which new words make up no more than 10% of the total. After a semester’s systematic training, students’ capacity for listening comprehension will reach Level 5 of JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).

Materials used in this class include news programs broadcasted in Japan, covering such areas as politics, economy, culture, and education, as well as audio or video tapes and CD that survey Japanese people’s social life and folk customs. Exercises that equal Level 2 of JLPT in difficulty will also be provided in this course. Balance will be maintained in class between instruction and exercise. The role of the teacher is more than giving an explanation of audio materials. He will try to develop students’ independence from his aid, and to familiarize them with social or cultural background implied in those listening materials. Course Introduction:
His course is intended for the fourth-year Japanese majors. Through watching videos or living broadcast, students will have an all-round improvement of their language proficiency, and a deeper understanding of Japanese society and culture, and will see Japan from a broadened point of view.
In-class exercise, instruction, and discussion will be the major class activities. Students are required to hand in a paper of 400-800 words on a regular basis, in which they can give a summary of what they have learned recently, describe their thoughts on a topic discussed in class, or argue for their standpoint in a specific social issue.

This is a course about the basics of Japanese writing. Students are first required to learn Japanese calligraphy and know the right way of using punctuation marks. Then they will start to learn how to introduce themselves and describe their everyday life, and, finally, to write expository and argumentative essays.
Students are expected to write more than 10 pieces each semester, mostly after class. These take-home assignments will be read and graded by the teacher of this course. Some grammatical errors and improper uses of words in students’ writing will be presented through OHP for all to see and revise. Moreover, a good part of class time will be devoted to explaining the assigned topic and analyzing students’ samples. Well-written pieces will be read aloud in class by their writers.

This course gives a systematic summary of grammatical knowledge that students have learned in the previous courses. They are expected to improve their grammatical proficiency, while preparing for Level 1 of JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).
This course is taught in line with Standards for Level 1 of JLPT. Through explaining the difficult points in Japanese grammar and comparing the grammatical uses that students tend to confuse with each other, this course aims to enable students to understand more deeply the semantic meaning of each grammatical point, and acquaint them with grammatical variation in Japanese.

By the end of this course students are expected to acquire an encyclopedic knowledge of Japanese society, including its geography, history, politics, economy, folk culture, etc. Through comparing Japan with China, students will have a better understanding of the civilization and people of this country, and the international relationship in Asia.
This course is a survey of Japan’s geographical conditions, population, climate, politics, economy, culture, education, history, and literature, as well as Japanese people’s thinking and behaving modes, folk customs and living habits. Class activities include lectures from the teacher, students’ duty report, video watching, and in-class debate.

Course Title: Network Communication in Japanese

Course Introduction:
Through communicating in Japanese online, students are expected to learn how to run a computer in which a Japanese operating system is installed, and input a Japanese text on a computer. Besides these skills, they will learn how to browse net pages in Japanese for information, and to improve their communicative competence online.
Students are assigned a topic each week. They are required to discuss the assigned topic on the network, and then hand in a written record of their online communication. Then they will have to summarize and reorganize the ideas in the record, and discuss the topic further in class.

Course Title: Outline of Japanese

Course Introduction:
This course is intended for the third-year Japanese majors. It is a systematic and theoretical introduction of the pronunciation and intonation of Japanese, letters and Chinese characters used in this language, and its lexical and grammatical features. After a semester’s study, students will have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of this language, and become more adept in using it.
This course consists of four parts. The first part examines the way vowels and consonants are pronounced in Japanese, the formation of a syllable in Japanese and Japanese phonemes. The second part deals with the way Kanji and Kana are used in written Japanese, as well as the functions of Kanji, and the evolution of Kana. The third section includes an introduction to vocabulary, the senses of a word, the formation of Japanese vocabulary, and the composition of a Japanese word. The last section is a survey of tense, aspect, and voice in Japanese. Lectures, in-class discussion and practice, and take-home assignment will all be considered in order to make this course more efficient. The interaction between the teacher and students will be ensured in this course.
