Purpose: The role of the DoCM is to develop, oversee and nurture OUMC’s ministry tochildren within our congregation and the community around usso that children candevelop a personal and lasting faith in Christ.
Primary Roles and responsibilities:
- Overseeing the Children’s Ministry of Ooltewah UMC and directing the implementation of its mission and vision.
- Assisting in the implementation of a long-range plan for the children’s ministry using a team-based approach involving a diverse group of adult volunteers.
- Designing a holistic ministry for children that instills a love for God, a life of spiritual growth and serving, and living in an awareness of their identity in Christ.
RELATIONSHIPS: The first priority of the Director of Children’s Ministries is to ensure that relationships are being built between the Children’s Ministry Leadership Team, volunteers, and the children of the church.
Result #1:The DoCMby the end of the first six months will strive to know the children in the church by name, as well as their parents.
Result #2:The DoCM prays for Ooltewah UMC Children’s Ministry, the children under their care, and their families regularly.
Result #3: The DoCM insures that a welcoming and safe environment is created for both the children and their parents.
Result #4:The DoCM serves as a knowledgeable resource for children and their parents and has a referral list of professional counselors and pediatric professionalsto access when necessary.
Result #5: The DoCMmodels the importance of community outreach by participating in community and school events involving childrenin order to build relationships with OUMC children and guests, and to promote OUMC within our community.
Result #6The DoCMintentionally connects with both parents and children in order to build relationships, create trust, and gather input for continual ministry improvement.
Result #7The DoCMworks with a teamto create learning environments that are able to nurture spiritual growth for children with special needs and their families.
Result #8The DoCM implements a program of friendly and timely follow up with first-time visitors to children’s events and church programs.
RECRUITING and SUPERVISION: The Director of Children’s Ministries coordinates and supervises the Children’s ministry staff and adult volunteers regularly to ensure that the efforts of the adult leaders are coordinated to maximize their effectiveness.
Result #9The DoCM will lead the team effort to recruit, train, and empower adult volunteers.
Result #10The DoCM will instill and model the value of small group participation to provide personal growth, spiritual support, relational connectedness, and ministry-related encouragement for the Children’s ministry team.
Result #11In conjunction with the Children’s Ministry Leadership Team, the DoCMleads the strategic planning progress of the Ooltewah UMC Children’s ministry by ensuring that-
1) three-year goals and one-year benchmarks for the Children’s ministry have been set annually and are reflected in their ministry and budgeting plans.
2) theChildren’s Ministry Leadership have established and measure key matrix to evaluate ministry health, growth, and effectiveness.
3) Clear and ongoing communication of ministry events, schedule, and scope of ministry is communicated to parents.
Result #12The DoCM will oversee and manage Children’s ministry staff to insure proper screening, placement, training and support are given to foster a positive and productive working environment.
Result #13The DoCM ensures that adherence to the Safe Sanctuaries policy of Ooltewah UMC has been followed in all children’s programs.
PROGRAMS: The DoCMensures that all details of children’s programs and special events are addressed so that an engaging atmosphere of belonging and fellowship is created, in which emerging spiritual and leadership skills can be developed.
Result #14The DoCMpartners with the CMLT to insure that all weekly ministry events are growing in participation, enthusiasm, and excellence.
Result #15The DoCM partners with the CMLT to develop a comprehensive Christiancurriculum for children as they grow and develop in OUMC’s Children’s ministry.
Result #16All volunteers are equipped with the information, training and tools needed to carry out their responsibilities.
Result #17The DoCM and the CMLT will plan a variety of seasonal outreach events on the church campus or in the community in order to intentionally reach out to the unchurched in our community.
Result #18The DoCMpartners with the DSM to develop unique events and groups (Tweens) to facilitate a smooth transition between the children’s and student ministries.
Result #19The DoCM is responsible for operating within the Children’s Ministry budget and works with the GROW Triad to developing the next year’s budget in alignment with the church’s overall strategic plan.
Result #20The DoCMwill partner with OUMC ministry partners (Camp Big Fish, Camp Lookout, etc.) to coordinate schedules, facilities usage, and look for win-win ministry gains.
Result #21The DoCM ensures opportunities are provided where children engage in hands-on ministry and missionboth within and beyond the church using their gifts, talents and abilities.
Result #22The DoCM serves as a member of the worship planning team to insure children’s inclusion and involvement in worship.

- Demonstrate ability to develop programs from idea generation to implementation; strong team building and recruitment skills; able to be a team player.
- Communicate clearly with a large group, and on an interpersonal level, through writing, speaking, and social media.
- Strong interpersonal abilities especially for influencing, motivating, and arriving at consensus in decision making.
- Ability to be flexible and problem solve quickly as needs in the ministry change from week to week. Adaptability and resourcefulness.
- Ability to modify curriculum to OUMC/community culture and maintain relevance to daily life.
- Participate in continuing education to remain current on best practices for ministry to children, ministry resources, and volunteer team development.
Preferred Experience/Qualifications:
- BS or BA degree in Christian Education, Children’s Ministry or a related field.
- Five years of experience working with children; three years of work experience on a church staff- preferably in a large church environment.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the United Methodist Church and adherence to its doctrine and polity.
- Demonstrated leadership ability as evidenced byhaving grown a business, organization, or ministry to higher levels of effectiveness.
