Compulsory Course for Work with Laboratory Animals

Students aiming to work experimentally with research animals (including all vertebrates, octopuses and lampreys) during their Master´s- or Bachelor’s Degree Projects need to complete a specific course including animal research ethics, regulations, care-taking/handling etc. This national course is web-based and specific for each animal group (e.g. rodents, fish, etc).

If the course is considered necessary for the student to be able to complete the planned Master´s or Bachelor´s degree projectin Biology or Molecular Biology, the cost for the course is covered by Biology Education.

Biology Education does not cover the cost for this course for students registered on Research Project for International Students or Applied work (Projekt- eller Praktikkurser).

If you and your supervisor agree that you needto complete theLaboratory Animal research course your supervisor applies for your participation in the course by sending the Registration form (see next page) attached toan email to (the Faculty of Medicine administrates these courses for Lund University) and cc. to .

On the following page you find the Registration form.

Note that for some animal groups (e.g. reptiles) the web-course is not yet available. In these cases, the normal procedure is that the student completes the general parts about legislation, ethics etc (i.e. the parts which are not animal-specific) of the rodent course and then gets the specific training in handling animals from the supervisor. If this is the case, select “Unspecified modules” and below list “Species of interest” in the Registration form (next page). When the module for your species is later available you can take it free of charge.

To register for any web-based LAS education, please fill in the form below and send to

Ifyou do not find your specific species in the list, we ask you to check the box for “Unspecific modules”. You will then be registered for the “Rodents” course, but be requested to take those modules that are more general. There might be lectures to complement the course that you will be summoned for.

To register for the course in “Swedish Legislation and Ethics”, you will need to complement your registration with a certificate of a previous LAS education, i.e. from another country.

The fee is for registering to the course, and not depending on when you complete.

It is needed to cover course development and maintenance.

For registered PhD-students at Medicinska Fakulteten, the fee will be covered by “doktorand-utbildningen”, but we will need the “kostnadsställe” for registration until this is confirmed.

Additional cost might be charged depending on the practical examination.
