PREFACE
The Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Science (HESS) at The Citadel requires that each of its Sport Management Majors complete the equivalent of nine (9) credit hours of work experience (Internship) as part of an agency’s staff. This internship is mandatory for completion of the requirements for the B.S. in Sport Management. The internship requirement includes a minimum of fourteen (14) weeks of full-time employment with a minimum of 400 contact hours with an agency that has been approved by the Department. In addition the internship must be preceded by a three (3) credit hours of Field Experience, during which the student will work for a minimum of 100 contact hours with an agency that has been approved by the Department.
Through the internship, Sport Management students have the opportunity to experience a variety of administrative and “hands-on” activities in a sport, recreational, or any other setting associated with the Sport Industry. Thus, the students will be involved in practical experiences needed for success in the competitive job market, being guided, supervised and mentored by qualified professionals in the field of Sport Management. Finally, an internship experience will allow the student to grow professionally, identify own strengths and weaknesses, and apply learned theories to practical situations.
This manual is based on previous guidelines and documentation procedures established for interns in the Undergraduate Teaching Track program and/or Master’s in Art of Teaching, both offered by the Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Science, and from similar Manuals and Guidelines for Internships in use either by other educational institutions or Industry’s agencies.
The manual was developed for Internship Students, Department Supervisors, Institution and Department Administrators, and Site/Agency Supervisors involved in an internship program. Its purpose is to serve as a guide as these individuals plan and implement student internship experience for course credits. It is a useful resource for planning and managing successful internship experiences that should enhance the educational experience of the student-intern.

Manual for
SPORT MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP
(PESM-499)
This manual is designed to meet the needs of undergraduate Sport Management students, and inform sport management agencies, and faculty members involved in the School of Science and Mathematics, Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences - Sport Management Internship Program, of their duties and responsibilities. This manual is a guide on the established policies of the department for the internship requirements. Although established mainly for Sport Management students, it also applies to any other departmental student who wishes, and is eligible, to enroll in the course.
The Internship Program
Internships in Sport Management, as in any other educational program, should consist of structured activities that lead to student-centered experiences. The following material is written with this in mind, emphasizing the place of the student in a three-sided program which involves the Sport Management Student Intern, the Sport Management Agency Supervisor, and the Departmental Sport Management Internship Supervisor.
The structured experiences of an internship involve the practical application of previously studied, through course work, theory. As such, they are targeted to the students’ meaningful future plans, and allow students to explore “first hand” careers of their interested. These experiences may be paid or unpaid, based on the type of internship program and/or agreement between the sponsoring institution/department, the student-intern, and the internship sport management organization where the student will be employed/placed.
Overall, the basic purpose of the internship program is to provide a planned transition from the university curriculum to a professional sport and leisure management setting. As such, internships are work-based structured activities, in which students that are at or near the end of a preparatory academic program, engage in learning through practical and relevant experiences at various sites. During the internship, the student will test the practical application of the theories of sport management in the agency setting under the guidance, observation, and supervision of an agency professional and a departmental sport management internship supervisor. As part of the leadership experience, the agency supervisor and the departmental sport management internship supervisor will evaluate the student. In addition, the student him/herself continually reviews his/her knowledge, skills, accomplishments, and professional growth as they apply to this preparation for entry into the Sport Management profession.
The Sport Management Curriculum
The purpose of a curriculum in Sport Management is to prepare students for leadership on administrative, supervisory, and/or instructional levels in various kinds of sport agencies. Such experiences may include involvement with sports center operations, health and fitness center management, sporting supplies and equipment sales, youth sports agencies, professional sports administration, civic center management, resorts, sports camps, and commercial operations involving professional and amateur sports. In addition, student interns may choose experiences in state and national parks, municipal park and recreation programs, outdoor recreation operations, residential camps, and other agencies providing leisure services.
Basic Objectives of the Sport Management Internship Program
The internship program is an arrangement involving the Student, the Department and the Sport Business Organizations. As such it has defined objectives, which might include but not be limited to the following:
1. Provide the student with an opportunity to integrate theory and practice in his/her professional education, and to encourage the exchange of contemporary thinking and insights between the Intern and Agency personnel.
2. Provide the student with an opportunity to promote and broaden his/her philosophy and understanding of the Sport Management profession.
3. Enable the student to obtain information which can be used as a basis for making choices in relation to future jobs, areas of specialization, and/or further studies in Sport Management.
4. Enable the student to realize his/her own strengths and weaknesses.
