“Honoring the Holy Spirit”

8/27/17 AM

Call to Worship: Revelation 4:2-8

Scripture Reading: John 14:15-18

Introduction: It’s unfortunate when we AVOID a subject because we don’t understand it.

While we have lots of questions when it comes to science, we don’t stop pursuing and encouraging others to pursue a greater understanding of the world from a scientific perspective.

Slide—“The Sun will burn your eyes out from a distance of 92 million miles and do you expect to casually stroll into the presence of its Maker?” [David Carr, @DCarr8; quoting Luke Walker, @spiritualswords]

It’s especially damaging when that subject is GOD.

Job learned that he could still trust God, even when he didn’t understand Him. We can as well.

One of the most perplexing things about our great God is His three-in-one nature, the “Trinity.” Arguably, the most challenging aspect of God’s nature is the Holy Spirit. I like the perspective of Tim Woodroof in his book, A Spirit for the Rest of Us…

As we close out our short series on “Our Great God” today, we do so with a look at the comforting presence of God with us today—the Holy Spirit—and how we can bring Him honor.

  1. The Holy Spirit is a part of God’s NATURE.

Matt. 3:16-17; 28:18-20; 1 Cor. 12:4-6; 2 Cor. 13:14; 1 Peter 1:1-2; 3:18

Acts 5:3-4; 2 Cor. 3:15-18

  1. The Holy Spirit continues the PRESENCE of Christ.

John 14:15-21, 25-26; 15:26-27; 16:7-15

Acts 2:38; 2 Cor. 1:21-22; Eph. 1:13-14

PM sermon—“God’s Comforting Presence”

  1. The Holy Spirit is honored when we live FAITHFULLY.

1 Cor. 6:19-20

Gal. 5:16-26

Rom. 8

Conclusion: “May the GRACE of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the LOVE of God, and the FELLOWSHIP of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Cor. 13:14)
