iPET Course Description

The course is a field-based internship that provides students with background knowledge of child and adolescent development as well as principles of effective teaching and training practices. Students work under the joint direction and supervision of both a teacher with knowledge of early childhood education and exemplary educators or trainers in direct instructional roles with elementary aged students. Students learn to plan and direct instruction and group activities, prepare instructional materials, develop materials for educational environments, assist with record keeping, and complete other responsibilities of teachers, trainers, paraprofessionals, or other educational personnel.

3 ring binder, dividers, black/red pen, USB drive, copy paper, children’s book (other supplies will be needed throughout the year).

Class Location

The class is held at Kingwood Park H.S.(4015 Woodland Hills Drive; Kingwood) in room 1405.

Internship School

Elementary schools will be selected based on proximity to the high school the student attends.

Transportation

As stated in the High School Planning Guide the students are to

provide their own transportation.

Grading

9 week grades will be based on the following:

3 summative grades and 12 formative grades

60% Daily – Formative (assignments, weekly report, notebook attendance)

40% Tests – Summative (mentor evaluation/teacher evaluation)

Absences

You must be on time to classes and the internship school. The student has two days after his/her return to school to bring an absence excuse. If no excuse is submitted, the absence will be regarded as truancy. (See Parent/Student Handbook). If you are absent from class or the internship site, you are required to contact me and your mentor teacher by 6:00am. You may contact us by phone (class #) or email and/or text message. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you don’t you will be penalize (-25 points) for the daily grade of attending class/internship.

Late Work
The policy forFORMATIVE work (homework/daily grades) that is graded is as follows:

Turned in ON TIME- student receives full credit.
Turned in 1 DAY LATE- studentreceives a maximum of 75.
Turned in 2 DAYS LATE- studentreceives a maximum of 60.
Turned in 3 DAYS LATE- studentreceives a maximum of 50.
Turned in 4 DAYS LATE- studentreceives a 0.

Make-Up Work

Students are expected to make up work missed while they were absent. They will be given full credit for work completed and satisfies the conditions of the district policy for make-up work. Immediately upon returning to school, the student must contact teachers concerning arrangements for making up work. When an absence occurs, it is the student’s responsibility to inquire about, complete, and return all required assignments. Students absent more than five (5) days must make arrangements with their teachers for making up the work missed within one week (5 school days) after their return to school. (See Parent/Student Handbook).

Field Trip Approval

A field trip is an extension of the classroom learning. They must be approved prior to the trip.

In order for a field trip to be approved several requirements must be met:

a.Prior written (email) notice from the mentor teacher.

b.Student attendance is taken into account (no more than 3 in six weeks).

c.Student must have a grade of 80 or above.

d. Parent must sign the class permission trip documentation from mentor teacher.

Academic Dishonesty/Plagiarism

Cheating on an assignment or test will result in a zero being recorded for that assignment or test. In addition, cheating is considered a level two conduct violation and is subject to additional disciplinary measures as discussed in the Student Code of Conduct.

Binder/Notebook

In order to be successful and achieve your personal and academic best it is necessary to maintain a high level of organization. To help you do this you are required to keep a notebook. This notebook is important to your success in this class. It will contain information that will help you.

Camera

You will want to document your experiences at the elementary school and on other field trips. Please have access to a camera to document these events.

Professional Appearance at the Elementary School

Students will dress in appropriate attire while working at the elementary school. ID badges are required at all times (at the Elementary School and In Class). Pants and skirts should be neat, no holes in jeans; you may wear tennis shoes or closed toe shoes. Shorts are to be worn ONLY for field day participation. No flip-flops, skirts and shirts that is too short or revealing. The way you dress is a reflection of you and this program. Be mindful that you are setting an example to all students in the elementary school. They are looking at how you dress and carry yourself. Remember you are preparing yourself to be a professional and the way you dress is a reflection of that. You are not allowed to wear (flip flops, shorts, mini skirts, low cut shirts, backless or strapless tops, tight pants/jeans, jeans with holes, low ride pants/jeans). If the insubordination continues they will have a conference with teacher, parent, principle and/or possible 1 week suspension and/or removal from program.

School Related Absences

Remember, students are only allowed to have 10 per year. Of these ten days, the students are limited to nine in any given semester. If a student participates in competition post district, they are allowed extra days. They are allowed a maximum of five absences for post-districtcompetition prior to state and amaximum of two absences for state competition. College Visitation Days

Students are allowed to take a total of 3 college day visits. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and follow the procedures outlined on their campus prior to using a college day in order to ensure that the absence is excused. For additional information please visit your student’s campus website. (See Parent/Student Handbook).

Parking

All students must have there Parking Pass in the dashboard of their vehicle. You will have a specific parking spot at KPHS to park in. If you choose to park other places, you are subject to tickets/towing.

I.D. Badges

It is a requirement that all interns wear the identification badge to class and the internship school.

Failure to Meet Expectations

Students that fail to meet class/teachers expectations will have a conference, parent contact, principle conference and/or suspension from the program.

Early Release Days for Elementary School (12:00pm)

The elementary students will have early release on the following days. The elementary students will get out of school at 12noon. If you are in the 5th & 6th period class you will be required to work on assignments (as independent study on your own). Make a note of these dates in your calendar.

The elementary schools will test on the following days. You are not allowed on campus. You will work on class assignments (as independent study). Make a note of these dates in your calendar.

The location and times for the graduation will be announced later. Graduation is Saturday, May 23, 2015.

Each school will report at the designated time according to the high school you attend. You are on different bell schedule so pay close attention. It is your responsibility to be on time to the elementary school and be back to your high school campus in time for your next class. Being tardy and late will count against you. If you are going to be tardy, late, or absent you must text me/call your mentor teacher to let us know.
