Date: Week 2 Lesson No: 2 Unit: 6th grade Social Skills
Course: CLC Student Success Skills Topic: Intro to SSS
Instructor Notes:
Classroom Environment Videos:
  1. Clip One: Kids are raising their hands, a student calls out, but is redirected, the teacher is walking around the room, teacher engages the class by connecting to their lives with the X-Men comic
  2. Clip Two: Kids aren’t nice to each other, the teacher is rude to students, and the teacher just shows a movie and sleeps.
  3. Clip Three: Cory and Shawn are disrupting the class by listening to a ball game. When redirected, Cory talks back to Mr. Feeny.

Learning Target:
  1. I understand the importance of goal setting and how being optimistic will help me achieve my personal goals.
  2. I understand how my actions impact my school/classroom environment.

Materials:
PowerPoint, SSS posters, Icebreaker activities, goal setting folders, classroom environment video clips, Finding Nemo video clip, Growth Mindset video clip, chart paper

Lesson Outline:
  1. Review classroom expectations(2 min.)
  2. Classroom Environment Video Clips(5 min)
  1. Show video clips and discuss which video clip shows the best environment for learning.
  1. (show to 1:31)
  1. Whole Group: flip chart for the best classroom environment. (8min)
  1. What are the students doing to create a positive classroom environment?
  2. What is the teacher doing to create a positive classroom environment?
  3. Connect to our PBIS procedures- Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible
  1. Discuss as a class what it means to be optimistic. (5-8 min)
  1. Connect to Growth Mindset
  2. Show Growth Mindset video clip:
  3. Connect to the “Just Keep Swimming” from Finding Nemo and show the video clip:
  1. What’s in it for me? Think, Pair, Share the benefits of SSS in and out of school(3 min)
  2. Goal setting folders: Each student will have their own goal setting folder for the year. Reassure students that only they and you will see the folders. On the left side of the folder staple Progress Monitoring sheet and on the right side staple in the academic and health/wellness goal sheet. Students will also keep other data in this folder, such as the looking good/feeling good survey. Quickly review these with students. (rest of time)
